Body and Blood

“Be devout. Be good. Then I will smile
down from heaven in the seam of a cloud”
(Anne Sexton, Cinderella).

Megan Donahue

I do not believe in God.
But there was a time that I did.
My father taught me how to pray,
All at the age of four.
“Be devout. Be good. Then [He] will smile
down from heaven in the seam of a cloud.”
And so the good girl I was,
I crossed my heart and hoped to die,
Who will stick the needle in my eye?
At Summer VBS1 they told me,
Fear hell, love Him:
He is in every man.
Never taught to be devoted to myself,
So with his cruel endeavor,
I was free for the taking,
Cut Piece2,
Body and Blood.
