Recount petitions have been filed by William B. Tauro, candidate for mayor, for a citywide recount for the Mayoral Election held on November 2, 2021.The recount has been scheduled for Thursday, November 18, 2021 at 9:30 a.m., in the Council Chambers of Somerville City Hall, 93 Highland Avenue Somerville, MA. 0214.

In order to assure an orderly recount, the following rules will be in effect:

• The only people who will be allowed to handle ballots and other election materials are recount workers and the members of the Board of Elections Commissioners. While agents may ask for a closer look, they may not touch the ballots or other election materials.
• Disorderly conduct and/or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Anyone creating a disturbance shall be warned once, then ejected and not allowed to return.
• Agents may challenge a decision of the recount workers as to how to count a particular ballot by stating the words “I object” or similar statement. Otherwise, agents must be silent to allow recount workers to count ballots without distraction. A runner will take the ballots which are the subject of objections to the Board of Elections Commissioners for final determination.
• Only the candidate or their attorney may present arguments to the Board of Elections Commissioners regarding ballots to which objects are raised during the counting process.
• Decisions of the Board of Elections Commissioners on any protested ballots will be final.

All persons attending the recount shall be required to wear masks at all times regardless of vaccination status and maintain appropriate distancing throughout the recount.

So after it’s all said and done Billy will end up with 209 votes instead of 206.

  2. Ron Newman says:

Can the city send “Bully”, oops I mean “Billy”, a bill for this pointless waste of time and taxpayer money?

There were 1180 write-in votes. Not all of them were for “Billy”; some were probably for Mickey Mouse or Joe Curtatone or the voter’s own name.

There were 264 ballots counted as blank. Maybe a few of these were incorrectly marked ballots that the voter intended as votes for “Billy”. Most were not.

Even if “Billy” got every blank vote and every write-in vote, that is a total of 1444 votes. The Mayor-elect, Katjana Ballantyne, got 9997 votes. It is mathematically impossible for this recount to change the election result.

Go back to Tewskbury. Take your ugly signs, your Hummers, and your yachts with you. And leave our city’s hard-working election workers alone.

  3. Bob Ross says:

Lol, the write-in campaign is now over, and he’s moved on to the recount campaign.

  4. Ron Jackson says:

What a waste of taxpayer dollars to feed Billy “The Narcissist” Tauro. I’m agreed with everything Ron Newman wrote above and seconding Billy to take his trash back to Tewskbery.

  5. Bob Ross says:

So did Billy prevail? I’ve been scouring the internet in search of hard-hitting coverage of this landmark recount, and so far I have found nothing.

  6. Rachel Klein says:

Word is he lost several votes with this recount. Just deserts.
