Somerville Open Studios (SOS) “Last Look Show” debuted on Saturday, June 5, at the Somerville Museum. The show, which features the works of local artists, will run till June 27. The hours will be Thursdays 2:00 – 7:00 p.m., Fridays 2:00 – 5:00 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays, 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. Entrance to the exhibit is free of charge, though the Somerville Museum always accepts donations.

The show is a reimagining of the annual “First Look Show,” which showcases the work of local artists in April and May. Complications arose around planning the event this year, due to both COVID-19 restrictions and the ongoing construction at the Somerville Museum.

In addition to being scheduled later than usual, the show was reduced in size. Instead of the typical 150+ pieces, 65 will be displayed in just one room. “It’s really just a snapshot,” said SOS volunteer Mara Brod. “This year is about keeping the tradition alive.”

In compliance with state and local laws, masks and social distancing are still required inside the museum. Be advised that due to construction, there are currently no bathrooms available to the public.

Anyone interested in art or volunteering with SOS in the future can contact domore@somervilleopenstudios.org, or visit their website at www.somervilleopenstudios.org. “We’re looking for anyone who wants to get involved, really to any degree. We have committees for planning, for publicity, for graphics.” said SOS board member and volunteer Terry Dovidio.

Dovidio also says there is currently a reception planned for the exhibit on June 20, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. While in years past the reception was for artists and their close friends, this year the reception will be open to all.

Although the museum is not normally open on Sundays, they are making an exception for this exhibit so that everyone has a chance to enjoy it.

The Somerville Museum is located at 1 Westwood Rd., in Somerville.
