Our View of the Times – May 12

The excruciatingly slow process of gradually bringing our lives and lifestyles back to normal post-pandemic continues to inch along at its own deliberate and extra-cautious pace.

The recent movement by the city into a modified Phase 4, Step 1 of the state’s reopening plan has breathed new life into the hearts and minds of all who have been affected by the lockdowns and restrictions set forth as an intended means of protecting everyone from the further spread of COVID-19 throughout the community.

We appreciate the caution, but we sure yearn for a return to normalcy – or as much of it that is possible in the near future.

The simple things we used to take for granted, such as gathering together for recreation and entertainment, seem so precious to us now. Will we ever return to that jaded state where these essential pleasures once again become under-appreciated? It’s hard to imagine that it could, but human nature being what it is, who knows?

One thing’s for sure, as the restrictions continue to be lifted – and more of that is on the way – a spirit of celebration will underlie our day-to-day goings on as we once again take up those cherished activities and finally feel at ease when it comes to all of us getting back together again.

Of course, we still need to exercise caution. Keep wearing those masks and practice social distancing whenever it is called for. And yes, go get yourself vaccinated if you can. It’s the biggest game in town right now, and well worth playing.
