Our View of the Times – September 16

If there’s something we Somervillians love and hold dear, it’s our public playing grounds – especially the grassy ones! And we have come to learn that it takes a considerable amount of both care and cash to keep them in tip top form and safe for all of us to make use of.

Our public parks and playing fields are enjoyed by young and old alike, especially kids who play sports there, whether organized by the schools or afterschool organizations, or simply under their own initiative.

Chief among these valued spaces is Dilboy Park and Fields, a facility that has played host to many generations of local sports enthusiasts. It has also served as an important venue for various events such as sporting exhibitions, fireworks celebrations, civic gatherings and many other types of gatherings.

In keeping up with the times and conducting important general upkeep, the city’s “Field’s Master Plan” includes lots of updates and renovations for Dilboy such as resurfacing the turf field and track, and reworking the natural grass fields to that they hold up better in wet weather and better withstand the hard treatment by sports players.

Additionally, the renovations will include protections against pollutants that have in the past inadvertently made their way into the Mystic River and Alewife Brook, something that no one wants to see happening.

All in all, the renovations to Dilboy Park and Fields will mark a milestone in its longstanding tradition of serving the community in style.
