Newstalk – November 30

Don’t forget to park on the EVEN side of the street this winter during snow emergencies. The Board of Aldermen voted to alternate every year, and this year it is the EVEN side. So scramble to get your spot as soon as they declare. Hopefully, the city won’t be calling any false alarms. Commissioner Stan Koty will give the signal when it’s about to snow.

Happy birthday to a lot of our friends and fellow Villens here this week: Happy birthday to local celebrity from Victor’s Deli,  Jason Fucile who, along with his wife Nancy, is celebrating this week. Also, happy birthday to a nice lady, Charlene Harris. We also wish her a speedy recovery. Happy Birthday to Craig Resmini of Winter Hill Liquors. We hope he has a great day for himself. Happy birthday to a good guy and old friend, Peter Forcellese the senior. We hope he has a great day as well. Happy birthday to local guy who is always busy, Peter Blaikie of Winter Hill. Happy birthday to Jimmy Del Ponte Jr., who celebrates this week. He and his brother work hard on their band Mallcops. Between school and road trips they keep very busy. We hope Jim has a great day for himself.

Real Estate Answers Show is on mainly Friday evenings at 6:00 p.m. and various other times. The latest episode concerns the use of solar energy here in the city. Christine Andrews, City of Somerville Housing and Environment Programs Coordinator, answers questions and explains how it would benefit property owners here in the city, even multi property owners. It’s a great program. Watch the show and go online to the City of Somerville website, www.somervillema.gov and right there on the front page is the program link. Call 617-625-6600 x 2567 to find out if your home qualifies now.

Our best wishes out to Alderman Bob McWatters, who isn’t feeling well lately. He’s a busy guy between his job and representing the residents so well in Ward 3.

Our condolences to the large family and many friends on the recent passing of Josephine (Alibrandi) DiPersio. Josie, to many who knew her, was a very nice lady and was very politically involved, going back many years. She was waked at Doherty’s Funeral Home on Tuesday and a Mass is being held at St. Ann’s on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.

Get well soon, Pat Norton, who recently was rushed to the hospital on Thanksgiving Day with foot problem. She’s home now and taking it easy.

Condolences to the family of Mark J. Haley, Sr. of Somerville, who passed away and will be waked out of Doherty’s Funeral Home, Wednesday, November 30 with Mass at St. Ann’s on Thursday, 11:00 a.m. His family has a GoFundMe page to help with the cost of the funeral. This was sudden and they need to raise money.

There’s a new website in town. Check it out at www.somervillema.com. The Somerville Times is on the site. Also check out www.medfordma.com. Someone asked online why we keep these two websites in Newstalk. We guess it’s because we like them.

For those that might be interested in obtaining certification for firearms should look up the Lawrence Rod & Gun Club. They provide an extensive program at the end of which you receive certification for Massachusetts/NRA Certified Firearm Safety Classes. They run a class once a month, which is limited to 10 people and we hear that this is the place to go to learn safety when handling guns. Email gunclub@earthlink.net for more information and or go to their website at www.lawrencerodandgunclub.org and read up about the course. We’ve been told that the course has seen a major increase in people applying for it, especially women. We can tell you first hand here that it’s a great course and quite thorough. The same goes for this in Newstalk. The club has informed us that many residents of Somerville have called or gone to the club to find out about certification.

It’s that time of year again, when we’re thinking of shoes and boots and much more. Head online to www.shoebuy.com for the best prices and fastest delivery right here in Somerville. We think Shoebuy is great. You go online to order, and within the next couple of days you get them delivered. Go see for yourself the vast inventory they have online for sale.

When you’re home and looking for a place to go out to that is sort of like the Cheers of Somerville, head down to Sally O’Brien’s on Somerville Avenue. Different entertainment every single night, from Open Mic to Texas holdem. Don’t forget to order up a cheeseburger. We like Open Mic night – we like watching not participating – but for those hams out there, maybe you’d like to try out your talent.
