NBC and Telemundo owned TV stations teamed up with hundreds of shelters across the country to host Clear the Shelters, a nationwide pet adoption drive on Saturday, August 17 to help find loving homes for animals in need. Kitty Connection, a no-kill, all volunteer rescue based in Medford, took part in the event locally. Nationwide, more than 250,000 pets found their forever homes since 2015.

Anything that helps animals find safe and happy homes is a plus. I was fortunate to adopt my beloved cat at a no-kill shelter in New Hampshire six years ago, and I have been grateful to them ever since. She’s a sweet, happy cat, and she has helped me get over some really bad times in my life. I am grateful every day for her.

More should be done to encourage landlords to accept pets. As long as the tenants prove to be responsible people, there’s no reason why they should have to give up their pets to be able to have a home. Nobody would ever give their kids up to move to an apartment if a landlord didn’t want kids. Maybe a tax break or some other incentive would let more landlords allow tenants to keep their pets when they move in.

There should also be more to encourage people to turn over animals they can’t keep or no longer want. Too many poor animals are either abused or left abandoned, rather than simply contact Animal Control or a shelter and have them take the animal away. All it takes is a phone call.

There’s no excuse for treating animals this way. Kudos to everyone who keeps these shelters going. Whatever we can do, big or small, will help them to continue doing the wonderful work they do to help animals find loving homes.
