Dietitians Andrea Svartsrom and Julia Rinehart are providing free, in-home medical nutrition therapy for people with diabetes or non-dialysis kidney disease through Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES).

A free, in-home medical nutrition therapy program that helps people with diabetes or non-dialysis kidney disease is now being offered through Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES).

Available at no cost for Cambridge, Medford, and Somerville residents with Medicare Part B coverage and certain diagnoses, the nutrition therapy program provides a personalized plan for managing health and ongoing professional support, explained SCES Registered Dietitian Julia Rinehart.

Please join Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, the Somerville Department of Health and Human Services, and the Somerville High School Gender and Sexuality Awareness Alliance (GSAA) on Tuesday, November 20, at 2:45 p.m., for a ceremony in honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance. The ceremony will take place on the City Hall concourse, 93 Highland Ave. The ceremony’s speaking agenda will include Mayor Curtatone, Somerville LGBTQ Liaison Jess Alter, Somerville High School GSAA Advisor Sarah Eustis, and student representatives from GSAA, followed by a raising of the Transgender Flag. The event is open to the public, and all community members are welcome. On Monday, November 12, City and Somerville Public Schools offices will be closed in observance of Veterans Day. Because of the holiday, trash collection will be on a one-day delay all week. There will not be street sweeping on Monday and parking meters and resident parking permits will not be enforced.

Mayor Joseph Curtatone, School Supt. Mary Skipper, Unruly Founder Bryanne Leeming, and AT&T New England President, Patricia Jacobs came to the Winter Hill Community School Wednesday to watch the 6th graders there demonstrate how they use tiles called “Splats” to help them learn to code. You can check out what the Splats do at: https://www.unrulysplats.com. Unruly was the winner of AT&T’s Aspire Accelerator grant. During the event, Bryanne Leeming announced that AT&T had made additional funding support to Unruly that will allow the startup to expand their STEM pilot program to every K-8 school in the city of Somerville.

Final Two Flu Clinics for 2018 Cancelled

The Somerville Department of Health and Human Services announced today that the city’s allotted supply of flu vaccines for 2018 has been fully exhausted, and therefore the final two planned flu clinics of the year, scheduled for Thursday, November 8, and Thursday, November 20, have been cancelled. HHS does not anticipate receiving additional vaccines, however residents are encouraged to receive the flu vaccine if you have not already done so. Vaccines are generally available by contacting your physician’s office, or at a local pharmacy.

On the evening of Tuesday, October 30, the City of Somerville Planning Board and the Board of Aldermen Land Use Committee gathered at East Somerville Community School to hold a joint public hearing on the proposed zoning ordinance.

Members of the community were invited to speak and share their thoughts and concerns over the new zoning regulations that are currently nearing completion.
