On the morning of Sunday, June 10, Somerville firefighters laid a wreath at the Arrow Paper Memorial and then proceed to Lowell Street fire station for ceremony where firefighters, elected officials, and members of the general public gathered to take part in the ceremony.

If ever there were a tour de force of poetic cravings this is it. What I Got for a Dollar is Somerville poet Bert Stern’s third poetry collection and it’s magnificent. Stern craves deeply, but not shrilly, the cause behind the cause of creation. He makes the basic argument for divinity’s possibility as deftly as Thomas Aquinas ever did. Perhaps better. In fact, the somewhat absent minded Deity that Stern conjures up behind his naturalistic images seems eminently likable, albeit dependent on humanity for help in keeping up appearances.

“Lead Paint Safe Somerville” to provide no-interest loans to qualifying property owners, tenants for lead-based paint remediation.

Mitigating lead paint hazards in Somerville’s housing supply is one of the priorities on Mayor Curtatone’s affordable housing agenda. This month, the Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development Housing Division kicks off a new program – Lead Paint Safe Somerville – designed to help address those hazards.

Following last year’s move to our new home in the beautiful and scenic Nathan Tufts Park, the Taste of Somerville, now in its 20th year, has continued to grow by leaps and bounds. Last year’s event served over 1,500 guests a comprehensive array of food, drink, and entertainment from 75+ restaurants, bars, beverage providers, and local artisans.

Join the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission and the Somerville Bicycle Advisory Committee on Sunday, June 17, for the annual Historic Bike Ride. The 2018 theme is “Exploring Somerville: New Faces of Enduring Places.” The tour will begin from Somerville City Hall, 93 Highland Ave., at 2:00 p.m., and conclude at 4:45 p.m. at Bow Market in Union Square for complimentary refreshments. The ride is escorted by Somerville Police officers, and is designed for all ages and riding levels. A $3 donation is appreciated, but not required. Please remember to wear your helmet.

The Somerville Public Library invites all members of the community to participate in the 2018 Summer Reading Program, running from June 19 to August 15. All three library locations will be offering a variety of programs and prizes around this year’s national Collaborative Summer Reading Program theme,Libraries Rock!™. For the second year in a row, the Somerville Public Library will be offering programs for readers of all ages, including children, teens, and adults.
