102nd anniversary celebration held on Saturday in Union Square

The 2019 edition of What the Fluff? A Tribute to Union Square Invention was presented last Saturday by Union Square Main Streets as part of the Somerville Arts Council/ArtsUnion.

The Committee to Elect Mary Marshall is hosting a fundraiser for her tonight, Wednesday, September 25, at Sally Obrien’s, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Please come support Mary in her race to become the next Ward 3 School Committee member.

The present debate over a bill (H.3012/S.2061) authorizing driver’s licenses for illegal aliens¹ reveals that progressive politicians and opinion leaders have disowned the recommendations concerning workplace enforcement and border security of the Commission chaired by civil rights leader and Democratic Congresswoman Barbara Jordan in 1997.

The Somerville High School Highlanders won their first game of the season this past Friday with a final score of 27–15 vs. the Malden Golden Tornadoes.

A lot of frustration has been building up over the big slowdowns happening on streets throughout the city over the past year or so.

What with bridge closures due to GLX development, general road repair and ongoing restructuring, and now the designation of dedicated bus lanes, separated bike lanes, and various other mobility upgrades, it seems to some that getting across the city in a reasonable amount of time is a thing of the past. A fond memory from a distant age.

ResiStat Meetings for All Seven Wards Will Be Held in the Month of October

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and the City Council invite residents to attend the fall ResiStat Community Meetings of 2019. These meetings are held twice a year in each of Somerville’s seven wards to share the latest City news, data, and neighborhood updates with residents, and provide an opportunity for residents, elected officials, and City staff to talk with one another.

No doubt inspired by the 2018 death of well-loved New England poet Donald Hall, this anthology pays tribute to Hall through poems about him and his beloved wife, Jane Kenyon, poems dedicated to him (or them), and poems responding to Hall’s work. At least half-a-dozen of the poems are inspired by specific poems Hall wrote, such as Scott T. Hutchinson’s Wild Honey, after Hall’s Self-Portrait as a Bear; Tricia Knoll’s Obsessed Haiku, after Hall’s Distressed Haiku; and Kyle Potvin’s Waiting for the Results, after Hall’s Her Long Illness.

Donald Hall, in his final collection of essays, A Carnival Of Losses: Notes Nearing Ninety published in 2018 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, included his 33 line poem Pissing Beside Donald Hall that was first published in Mudfish magazine in New York City.
