Peter DiMuro/Public Displays of Motion (PDM) will be presenting the first of its Queer Cabarets, a part of PDM’s Stones to Rainbows/Gay to Queer Lives project. The three different live cabaret shows take place over two days in the Arts at the Armory Performance Hall, featuring a multi-media arts installation, and area and national LGBTQ+ community members in previously video recorded interviews. Live performers will include members of the Boston-region’s eclectic LGBTQ+ community. Area LGBTQ+ organizations and artisans will also be displaying and selling their wares.

Bike Bash @ Assembly

On October 13 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., join MassBike and MassCommute to celebrate a successful Bay State Bike Month and MassCommute Bicycle Challenge with an outdoors party on the new Public Lawn at Assembly Row.
 
To get in the party mood, they’ll be joined by some musical entertainment A Trike Called Funk and Hot Molasses. They will have food provided by The Smoke Shop BBQ and Night Shift Brewing is offering to donate $2 for every drink, so you can grab a brew and support MassBike.

New Commodity Supplemental Food Program for elders delivers

SCES volunteer Irene Carmen prepares to make deliveries for the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP).

Offered through a partnership with the Greater Boston Food Bank, the program provides two bags of groceries each month. CSFP is open to Cambridge and Somerville residents age 60 and over who meet income eligibility requirements.  We are also still seeking Volunteers to help with the program.  Call 617-628-2601 or email info@eldercare.org for more information.

SHINE offers free Medicare counseling for Open Enrollment

The open enrollment period runs from October 15 to December 7, and in most cases it’s the only time of year Medicare recipients can change plans and coverage.

SCES partners with SHS for Grab-and-Go meals

Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES) and the Culinary Department at Somerville High School have partnered to offer Grab-and-Go meals this fall.

The meals are free for eligible recipients. Cambridge or Somerville residents over age 60 are eligible, as are spouses and dependents with a disability of eligible people who are receiving a meal.

Latin American Heritage Celebration, October 11

The celebration will include music, food, a talent show, a traditional dress presentation, a piñata, raffles, and stories of everyday heroes in the community.

Somerville’s Indigenous Peoples’ Day holiday schedule

On Monday, October 11, Somerville celebrates Indigenous People’sDay. City buildings will be closed, trash and recycling pickup delayed by one day. Street sweeping will be skipped that day.

 

Voters have until Wednesday, October 13, to register to vote or update their voter information for the Tuesday, November 2 election. In this election, voters in Somerville will cast ballots for Mayor of Somerville; four City Councilor-at-Large seats; Ward City Councilor in Wards 2, 5, and 7; and School Committee Members in Wards 3 and 7.

Every 10 years, Massachusetts cities and towns are required to review their population data from the most recent U.S. Census and submit an updated ward and precinct map to the State for approval. The State provides municipalities with strict guidelines that must be followed for this process. An internal working group is collaborating with the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s Office to propose new ward and precinct boundaries that will be submitted to the City Council for local approval on October 28.
