Above and Beyond: The Remarkable Life of Somerville Olympian Phil Reavis, an exhibit at the Somerville Museum, will hold its closing reception, Saturday, July 8, 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. Above and Beyond showcases the life of Phil Reavis, a Somerville native, Olympic athlete, long-time educator, and one of the first people of color in Somerville with a public space named in his honor. Reavis broke records as high jumper, appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine, coached Vietnam’s 1964 Olympic track and field team, and enjoyed a long career as a teacher, coach, and musician. A world traveler, Reavis now divides his time between Somerville and Macau, China. The Somerville High School’s athletic field will be named The Philip Reavis, Sr. Field. Recently, I caught up with writer Shir Lovett-Graff, a new Somerville resident who is attending Harvard Divinity School.
Lovett-Graff is a writer, community organizer, and divinity school student based in Somerville, MA. Originally from New Haven, CT, their work has been published in numerous literary magazines and journals, most recently in EcoTheo Review, West Trestle Review, and The Bangalore Review. They are currently working on a chapbook about trans erotic poetics and climate change.

Mayor Katjana Ballantyne and the City of Somerville hosted the annual Fourth of July fireworks celebration at Trum Field on Thursday, June 29. A crowd of all ages enjoyed a night of entertainment by DJ Philip Tan, a live performance by local funk band Midnight Motion followed by a display of fireworks.

Medford Police Department is investigating a report that a Medford woman in her 20s was physically assaulted in the area of Main Street and Royall Street while out on an evening walk around 10:45 p.m. on Sunday, July 2. The woman noticed the male suspect first near the intersection of Boston Avenue and College Avenue and realized he was following her. When she made it to the end of Royall Street at Main Street, the man ran up to her, grabbed her from behind and struck her several times. After a brief struggle in which the woman was fighting back and screaming loudly, the suspect fled back down Royall Street toward College Avenue. The woman suffered apparent minor injuries and was transported to the hospital by Armstrong Ambulance.Continue reading »

The Sumner Tunnel will be closed seven days a week from July 5 to August 31. During this time, traffic will be diverted through signed detour routes.
The Sumner Tunnel is undergoing a restoration that began in the spring of 2022. This work requires the tunnel to be closed to traffic periodically.
