Somerville introduces Mattress Recycling Fee Program

Fees for state-required mattress and box spring recycling go into effect February 1, 2026
The City of Somerville currently spends nearly $300,000 each year to cover the cost of recycling mattresses and box springs discarded by residents. Since November 2022, state law has required that all discarded mattresses and box springs be recycled to reduce pressure on landfills, significantly increasing municipal recycling costs statewide.

Riverside Community Care, headquartered in Dedham but with services in Somerville, has been named a Top Workplace for the fourth consecutive year.

Riverside Community Care, a nonprofit leader in behavioral healthcare and human services with programs in Somerville, has been named one of the 2025 Top Places to Work by The Boston Globe for the fourth consecutive year. Riverside is one of only 45 organizations recognized in the largest category (1,000+ employees). The winners were featured in Globe Magazine on Sunday, December 8.

The Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) with Somernova Site developer Rafi Investments-Somerville, LLC (Rafi) requires that the USNC constitute a “CBA Implementation Committee” (CBA-IC) consisting of five (5) members to monitor the progress of all the commitments entered into by Rafi and the USNC under the CBA.
