
The Serviceman’s Readjustment Act of 1944 – better known as the GI Bill – has come down to us as one of the most significant pieces of legislation on the twentieth century. Most take it for granted today as a major success story, but the truth is that the GI Bill very nearly failed in Congress; and its practical effects were not what millions of veterans had a right to expect from it. In this presentation, we will delve into the story of the GI Bill, praising its virtues, even as we take account of its failures.

The Somerville Public Schools’ (SPS) annual school enrollment period for prekindergarten and kindergarten students will open on January 3, 2024, and SPS staff are gearing up to make sure Somerville families are ready and able to enroll students. All students who will be 4 years old by August 31, 2024 are eligible for the district’s PK program. All students who will be 5 years old by August 31, 2024 are eligible for Kindergarten.

Because Veterans’ Day falls on a Saturday, city offices will be open on Friday, November 10 and Monday, November 13. There will be no change to trash collection or street sweeping schedules. Permit parking and meters will follow a holiday schedule on November 11.
