Somerville Affordable Housing Trust seeks one new member

The City of Somerville seeks one Somerville resident to serve in a volunteer capacity on the Somerville Affordable Housing Trust (SAHT). This vacancy is for a Somerville tenant whose household is income eligible for federal or state housing programs with an interest in addressing and advocating for the city’s affordable housing needs.

With storm conditions forecast to worsen overnight, to help provide shelter for unhoused community members, the City and the Somerville Homeless Coalition will open a joint temporary Overnight Warming Center. The shelter, which is for persons experiencing homelessness, will be open Tuesday night, March 14, into Wednesday morning, March 15

Help celebrate Paul Revere’s famous ride from Boston to Lexington and Somerville’s revolutionary history by volunteering to be a part of Somerville’s Patriot’s Day festivities. The city is seeking volunteers to help publicize and support activities at the Colonial Fair on Monday, April 17, at Foss Park, which follows a reenactment of Revere’s ride. Both adults and Somerville students are welcome to sign up.

Earlier this winter, Somerville Family Learning Collaborative’s Clothing Closet volunteers received a generous donation from Mass General Brigham that provided the Somerville Public Schools with winter clothing for students in need. Mass General Brigham has been an SPS partner for many years, and they returned this season to provide more resources and much-needed items than ever before. After announcing the request in their company newsletter, employees across Mass General Brigham’s many sites provided hundreds of new pairs of socks and gloves as well as hoodies, hats, boots, and coats for students and their families in Somerville.

Vehicles travelling both eastbound and westbound on Powder House Blvd, between North St. and Alewife Brook Parkway, will be detoured during construction hours (weekdays 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.)

  • Westbound traffic will be directed south on North St., west on Broadway to return to Alewife Brook Parkway.
  • Eastbound traffic will be directed south on Alewife Brook Parkway, east on Broadway, north on North St. to return to Powder House Blvd.

An exciting new taste for SCES Nutrition programs

There’s an exciting new look and taste for meals served though the Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES) Nutrition programs, and SCES is inviting the community to give a try.

Catering for SCES Meals on Wheels and Congregate Meals sites is now provided by City Fresh Foods, a Boston-based vendor that provides 2 million meals annually for schools, childcare, and older adult services across the Greater Boston Area.

On 3/2/23 at approximately 7:36 p.m., Somerville Police responded to a residence on North St. for report of a breaking and entering. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the reporting party who stated several valuable items were stolen from her mother’s apartment while she was out.

24th Annual Maple Boil Down

All are invited! Join in the fun. As part of this project, a team of volunteers tapped a swath of maple trees on the Tufts campus beginning in late January, collecting dozens of gallons of sap over a number of weeks.
