Somerville Little League tryouts took place this past Sunday at the Cousens Gym located on the Tufts University Campus at 161 College Ave in Medford from 10am to 4pm. Youths from across Somerville were there for the tryouts to determine their placement on teams for the 2010 Somerville Little League season. Somerville Police Officer Dominic Pefine is the league's President and has devoted countless hours preparing for this day for the youth of Somerville, as opening day is just around the corner in April.

Do you know the size of your carbon footprint? The City of Somerville is trying to decrease theirs with the help of a $650,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) will fund a Comprehensive City-Wide Energy Roadmap and residential energy efficiency programs.

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, the Board of Aldermen (BOA), and Director of the Office of Sustainability and the Environment, David Lutes, made the announcement last week after the BOA accepted the funds in their weekly meeting. This isn't Somerville's first attempt to conserve, they implemented an Environmental Strategic Plan in 2007, which focused mostly on updating municipal buildings.

The highest honor that a Lion's Club member can receive is the "Melvin Jones" award, which was recently presented to Somerville Lion's Club member Timothy O'Malley for his hard work and dedicated service to the club throughout the years. The award was presented during the Somerville Lion's Club Saint Patrick's Day Dinner Show/Charity Event this past week. Massachusetts 33K Vice District Governor Joyce Hogan had the honors of presenting the award to Tim in the function room before a big crowd of members and supporters at the Mount Vernon Restaurant.

Also that evening, local Somerville attorney Maria Curtatone was sworn in as the newest member of the Somerville Lion's Club. During the evening, there were raffles, give-a-ways and tickets to see the famous "Harlem Globetrotters" basketball team that is playing in Boston next week that were auctioned off to the highest bidders. All proceeds from the event will be distributed to local charities that the Somerville Lion's Club supports.

Workshop on bullying and cyberbullying addresses growing concerns

On March 18, 2010, in Uncategorized, by The News Staff

Bullying
has always been a concern in schools, but, given the role that
technology currently plays in adolescent culture, cyberbullying is an
exponentially-increasing issue. In the past two months alone, Facebook
played a role in the suicide of a South Hadley teenager and recent
criminal charges brought against Newburyport High Schoolers.

To
keep Somerville parents up to date, Margie Daniels hosted a workshop on
Bullying and Cyberbullying on Wednesday, March 10. Daniels, the
executive director of Middlesex Partnership for Youth, a non-profit
providing prevention and intervention resources to Middlesex school
districts and communities, links these workshops to District Attorney
Gerry Leone's interest in violence prevention, anti-bullying and
Internet safety.

"There are always people who use technology
inappropriately," said Daniels, who recalls prank calls before caller
ID, or anonymous notes shoved into lockers. "The difference here, with
Facebook, instant messaging and cell phones, is the very rapid
transmission of information to a number of people, even to thousands."
