EPA gives Mystic C- for water quality
By Andrew Firestone
Sunday was a beautiful day for a paddle fest on the Mystic River but concerns about substandard water quality continue to flow.
Curt Spalding, recently appointed by President Barack Obama as the Environmental Protection Agency's New England administrator, said the Mystic River's water quality was given a C- grade.
The low grade was based on bacteria levels in the water.
According to an EPA report, the Mystic River meets boating standards 93 percent of the time, but swimming standards only 57 percent of the time. The grade has failed to rise for the last three years, since rising from a D in 2008.
"It is persistence that matters in restoring urban waters," said Spalding. "It's not going to be a day or a week, it's going to take years," he said.

(from the Somerville police) Somerville Police today released a composite sketch of a suspect who was involved in two assaults on women earlier this month. On May 6th, at about 10:30 p.m., a 21 year old female victim reported that she was walking on Main Street from Broadway nearing Moreland Street when she heard the sound of footsteps. She looked back and saw a man behind her. Less than ten seconds later this male subject grabbed her from behind and indecently assaulted her. The victim was able resist her attacker. She then ran to a safe location. When she looked back she saw her attacker running back toward Broadway. The suspect is described as a white male with a darker shade of skin. He seemed young, perhaps in his twenties and seemed to be in good shape. She said he was sprinting from the scene like a younger man. His hair was described as looking like "a fresh buzz cut hair style; neat and particular." The suspect's hair color was black or dark brown. The suspect was wearing shorts below the knee and a hooded sweatshirt. |
