Recycling pilot delayed to October 14

New 65-gallon recycling carts were delivered to about 1,300 Ward Five households on October 6 and 7, as part of a pilot program to test single-stream recycling in Somerville. The pilot was delayed by a week due to a problem at the cart manufacturer, but collection of single stream recyclables will start in the pilot neighborhood on October 14.
 

Mayor’s Bike Ride Moved to Monday 10/18

Due to rainy weather forecast for Friday, 10/15, Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone’s 3.25-mile bike ride along many of Somerville’s new bike lanes and sharrows (which are roads marked to inform motorists to share the road with cyclists) has been moved to Monday, 10/18.

The ride will start at the intersection of Powderhouse Bvld. and Curtis St., head east to College Ave, head south to Davis Sq. where it will turn onto the Community Path, then turn south on Cedar St., taking it all the way to Elm, before turning east on Somerville Ave. and finishing in Union Square.

DIF-fering opinions on City Hall’s new development plan

Finger print database upsets advocates

A Somerville-based immigrant group and lawyers from the American Civil Liberties Union are comparing a new plan by Boston police to monitor illegal immigrants to futuristic techniques from the George Orwell novel “1984.”

Centro Presente and others discussed the methods and ethics of the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) at a community meeting Oct. 5, calling into question the legality of the Boston Police Department’s compliance with the new $1.4 billion Secured Communities initiative by ICE.

Thursday night Oct. 14 from 8 to closing at Michaels Bar at  Washington Street and Franklin Street, there will be a  get-together for  David Carnevale  who is running for State Senator for Somerville, Medford and Winchester.  David is a young self employed candidate who is a resident of Medford; he is running against the Progressive’s candidate: Pat Jahlen.  Come and meet David and meet a lot of your friends there as well, the get togher was started by a couple of people and it has gone wild with people wanting to be there. Help give David a sendoff to victory on November 2.

The View From Prospect Hill – 10/13

Brian Harris coached girls basketball at Somerville High School for 18 years. In that time, he won 260 games and seven league championships.

But the stat we like most is this one: in the last two seasons, each of his players graduated and none were ruled academically ineligible.

Last week, Somerville High School Athletic Director Nicole Viele and Superintendent Anthony Pierantozzi replaced Harris with a new coach. The move, they say, was a result of four criticisms, mostly concerning court side behavior. One of Viele’s criticisms concerned Harris’ body language.

Somerville High School soccer rolls despite injuries

Even despite injuries and obstacles, the Somerville High School boys soccer team has managed to stay the course.

Led by a balanced attack, the Highlanders cruised to a 4-0 win over Malden last Wednesday at Dilboy Field. Coupled with last Tuesday’s 2-2 tie with Medford and a 2-1 win over Cambridge, the Highlanders now stand at 5-3-3 overall.

Directions for the future via St. Clement

St.Clement’s organized a canned food drive on behalf of the Little Brothers of Boston Thursday. Students raised funds for the school through a walkathon. St.Clement will be conducting a open house Wednesday,Oct. 13 for new admissions from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Somerville Police arrest Joshua Tree patron after disturbance

A Canton man was arrested in Davis Square Saturday after he allegedly threw a shot glass inside the Joshua Tree and called a police officer a “clown,” police said.

Aurimas Valionis, 30, of 735 Randolph St., Canton, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Police said he refused to leave the Joshua Tree at closing time.

Somerville High School volleyball continues to struggle

For the Somerville High School volleyball team, the road to victory continues to be a long and winding one. Despite a solid effort, the Highlanders suffered a tough 3-0 defeat to the Matignon Warriors in last week’s non-league match-up. With the loss, the Highlanders fell to 1-8 overall.

In the sweep, the Highlanders suffered close defeats: a 25-22 defeat followed by losses of 25-21 and 27-25.
