Two suspects wanted in Somerville’s Union Square armed robbery

Two teenagers robbed and assaulted a man Jan. 5 in Union Square near the Red House Restaurant, police said.

Police said the victim was walking on Walnut Street at 12:44 a.m. when he noticed two people walking closely behind him. The two people approached him and grabbed his arms, police said.

In accordance with the City’s Snow Emergency Procedures, Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone has declared a snow emergency for the City of Somerville to go into effect at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 11th.   During snow emergencies, parking is allowed on the odd-numbered side of the street only (unless otherwise posted).  Cars not moved by midnight on Tuesday (12:00 a.m. Wednesday) will be ticketed and towed.  As of 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, residents unable to find a parking space on the odd-numbered side of the street may park in any municipal lot for the duration of the emergency.  A list of available city lots and other relevant information may be found on the City’s website, HERE.

Led by a solid performance by Nicole Genard, the Somerville High girls track team was well represented in this weekend’s Dartmouth Relays.

Genard, who completed in the 55 meter hurdles, finished second overall with a time of 8.21.

Somerville, MA. John Wallace, a senior at Somerville High School, has accepted a position on the UMass Amherst Football Roster beginning in Fall 2011. Wallace, who is 6’ 4” and weights 265 pounds, has played on both the Defensive and Offensive lines on the Somerville High School Football team for all four years of his high school career. During the 2010 season he made 5 sacks, and 66 tackles, 47 of which were unassisted. He was a Greater Boston League All-Star in both 2009 and 2010 and was named to the ESPN.com 1st Team All-State in 2010.

Free flu vaccine clinics through January

The 2010 flu clinic schedule will be running through January 2011. All Somerville residents over the age of two are eligible to receive a free flu vaccine.

Remaining flu vaccines are available at The Somerville Health Department, 50 Evergreen Avenue on Thursday evenings, from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. No appointment is necessary.

Residents are asked to bring Medicare or Medicare HMO card, if you have one.

Okay, Christmas is over. The New Year has begun.  I just took my tree down and packed away the manger and the nativity figures.

It wasn’t fun. It was kind of sad. Another Christmas has come and gone. I got lots of great gifts and spent quality time with family and friends but still, I am somewhat blue.

It may have something to do with my vacation being over and the kids going back to school. No matter how old I get, I am bummed out when vacations (especially school vacations) are over.

Somerville artist and graphic designer Julia Tenney discovered another use for her favorite drink one day last year at the True Grounds Coffee Shop in Ball Square. After spilling coffee on her watercolor paper she picked up her cup to see it had left a ring behind.

Plow driver captures pipe wielding suspect with cell phone camera

A Malden man driving on Sturtevant Street threatened a father and son with a pipe on Dec. 28, police said. Before he could get away, the quick thinking victim snapped a photo of the pipe wielding suspect using his cell phone, police said.

Omar Otero-Torres, 23, allegedly held the pipe up and yelled at the victim, “I got you now!” before driving off, police said. The victim was driving a truck with a plow attached to it and clearing snow in the area, police said.
