Normally, the Elizabeth Peabody House serves as a daycare and emergency food service pantry to Somerville’s neediest families. On April 2, it was transformed into a pizza party, where, for $10 at the door, citizens of Somerville could sample the wares of local pizza parlors, all for a good cause.

Teen arrested for assaulting liquor store owner

A North Street man who tried to shoplift a bottle of rum punched a liquor store owner in the face when  the store owner tried to stop him from leaving, police said.

Steeve Milice, 19, was arrested at 115 Alewife Brook Parkway Saturday and charged with assault and battery, possession of a dangerous weapon and shoplifting.

Girls track looks for success with combo of vets and newcomers

Somerville girls outdoor track coach Charles O’Rourke says after two weeks of practice the squad’s lineup is beginning to take shape.
“In the sprints and hurdles we should be fairly strong with Nicole Genard, Michel’le Meranda, Gelynne Berger, Ashley Murphy, Yemi George and newcomers Alison Kaba and Melissa Baptista. The middle distances feature Sasha Garczynski, Tayla Plett, Jessie Vasquez, Laxmi Spearing, Siobhan Murray, Meghan Lynch and Rachel Berry. The distance events could be a strong point for us with Iaritza Menjivar, Pristine Mei, Rita Musello-Kelliher, Melina Garro-Duplisea, and Maggie Langwig.

For the past 10 years I have read and hosted for the Boston National Poetry Month Festival founded by Harris Gardner. And like every year there will be a number of Somerville-based poets included.  Union Square denizen and yours truly Doug Holder, Harris Gardner (a new resident of our burg), Ifeanyi Menkiti (owner of the Grolier Poetry Book Shop), Timothy Gager ( Co-founder of The Somerville News Writers Festival), and Gloria Mindock (founder of the Cervena Barva Press) will all be reading from their work.

Thornton and Novembre earn honors at HOT SHOTS

Saint Clement School announced today that Head Coach and Athletic Director Shawn Thornton and senior forward Christy Novembre from Cambridge, MA earn honors at this years HOT SHOTS dinner celebration on Wednesday, March 30 at the New Balance Outlet in Brighton, MA.  The ceremony sponsored by New Balance Outlet, Sal’s Pizza and The Boston Herald began with honoring each athlete and coach who was selected by Danny Ventura, Boston Herald High School Sports Writer and his staff.

Shape Up Somerville road race postponed

The Shape Up Somerville road race, initially scheduled for Sunday, April 10th, has been postponed. The race will be rescheduled for Sunday, June 5th, when the City anticipates hosting its first SomerStreets event of the season on East Broadway. Additional information will be available in coming weeks, however the race will still offer a children’s “Fun Run,” as well as adult walking and running courses. Signing on to celebrate National Public Health Week (NPHW), Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and the Somerville Board of Aldermen declared the week of April 4 – 11, 2011 as “National Public Health Week in Somerville” during the regular meeting of the BOA on Thursday evening. The City of Somerville and Somerville Health Department will celebrate the week’s theme, “Safety is No Accident: Live Injury Free,” with a series of events, discussions and seminars throughout the week. Since 1995, NPHW has been sponsored by the American Public Health Association, and is designed to highlight issues that are important to improving the public’s health.

A friend of mine came up with the idea of doing a spoof on the many “Real Housewives” shows on TV. I am working on that idea for my cable show, “Seriously Somerville.”  In the meantime I asked my friends to give me some good examples of typical Somerville housewives, old school version, of course.
