Two different design options are currently on the table as developers and community leaders work towards a finalized plan for the North Street Playground.

Preliminary designs for the North Street Playground are underway at the Clarendon Hill Housing Development.  In spite of a slowing economy, Somerville maintains their vigilant efforts to develop a friendlier environment. Presently known as North Street Veterans Park, the future playground will receive a facelift in the coming spring. The .22 acre park needs a new look according to residents of the neighborhood.

Somerville-based Community Cooks feed a growing need

Several times each month, Vicky I works together with a half dozen or so of her Somerville neighbors to make a full-course meal for 15 to 20 people they’ve never met.

Mauricio Silva, 30, of 332 Main St., Gloucester, September 26, 3:53 p.m., arrested at 42 Franklin St. on warrant charges of unregistered motor vehicle, uninsured motor vehicle, and receiving stolen propert.

Jeremy Lookado, 27, of 210 Windsor Dr., Cambridge, September 26, 5:10 p.m., arrested at Myrtle St. on a warrant charge of operation of a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

Luke Hartnett’s fumble return highlighted the Anchormen’s victory Friday night.

Football

The St Clement Anchormen stunned league rival Matignon in a thrilling 28 – 26 come from behind victory last Friday night. With 1:19 left in the game, Ricky Brathwaite (Chelsea) forced a fumble that popped into the open arms of Luke Hartnett (Medford) who chugged his way into the end zone giving the St. Clement Anchormen the come from behind victory. The win, which makes the Anchormen 4-0, was bittersweet for Harnett who played for the Matignon Warriors in 2009.

Kitty Beer, a member of the Somerville Bagel Bards, sets her new novel Human Scale in 2062, a time in which Boston is under water and the suburban town of Arlington, MA, has become a seaside community. Beer, a graduate of Harvard University and Cornell University, has been an environmental journalist for many years and to her a scenario such as this is far from far-fetched. I talked with Beers on my Somerville Community Access TV show Poet to Poet: Writer to Writer.

The Somerville girls varsity volleyball team lost to Methuen 3-0, and beat GBL opponent Everett 3-0 last week.  They are now 6-3, and 3-1 in the GBL.

In advance of meetings with the Board of Aldermen and the School Committee concerning the reconstruction of the East Somerville Community School (ESCS), Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone is publicly reaffirming the City’s commitment to the project.

I have a cat, MENOW.  He is a rather famous feline. His picture has been in The Boston Globe posing with yours truly in the offices of the Ibbetson Street Press. As any pet owner knows, cats become an important part of the family, and when they pass one suffers like one would for a beloved relative.  Poet Keith Tornheim writes a poem for his cat–and the passage of time.

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone has sent an official letter to Waste Management of Massachusetts, Inc. that the City intends to terminate the sanitation company’s lease at 10 Poplar Street effective October 1, 2012.

At about 1:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, Somerville Police responded to 10 Illinois Avenue for a report of gunshots.  Upon the arrival of police, they discovered a 35 year old male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds on the front porch.  The victim was transported to an area hospital where his wounds were determined to be non-life threatening.  Police also discovered that a parked vehicle that had also been struck by a single gunshot.
