SomerStreets celebration to feature Monster Mash-Up

It’s been a Halloween party staple for nearly six decades, but the Monster Mash is about to get a whole new twist.

At this Sunday’s SomerStreets event, dubbed “Monster Mashed-Up,” local deejays will compete to create the best mash-up with the classic novelty hit that made a star out of Somerville native Bobby “Boris” Pickett.

Somerville Police investigate indecent assault and battery

Somerville Police are investigating an indecent assault and battery that occurred late Thursday evening.  At about 11:30 p.m., a 23 year old woman was walking to a friend’s home, from the Porter Square MBTA station. As she passed the area of Elm Street and Holyoke Road, she was approached from behind by an unknown suspect, pushed into a car and indecently assaulted.  The victim screamed, causing the attacker to flee.

The victim described the suspect as a white male, in his mid-twenties, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and was clean shaven.  He was wearing a black hooded sweat shirt with the hood pulled up and possibly jeans.  The suspect fled toward Elm Street.

1961 was a good year for the city, but a bad year for me. Mayor Harold W. Wells was running the city with help from Aldermen McKenna, McCarthy, Travaline, Burke and Moynihan. Dad, after holding down three jobs for years, bought the family home off of College Ave. Somerville, along with the rest of the world, was grooving to songs like Hit The Road Jack, Calendar Girl, Where the Boys Are and Michael Row The Boat Ashore. On television we were watching I Love Lucy, 77 Sunset Strip, The Real McCoy’s, and The Donna Reed Show, mostly in black and white.

Lumber wielding assailant stopped

Police were called to the scene of a reported fight last Sunday at a residence on Bailey Road.

A man at the scene told officers that he had gotten into a fight with another man and that he had been struck by the other with a piece of wood taken from the home’s backyard, police said.

It’s….it’s The Somerville Bulb Blitz

The First Ever Somerville Bulb Blitz! is a City of Somerville initiative aimed at building landscape stewardship and community. 52 volunteers showed up at six locations throughout the City to plant 2012 daffodils and tulips. While volunteers had a a great time flexing their muscles, the ultimate gratification will be in the Spring when the City blooms with color. Volunteers worked at Union Square, Wilson Square, Davis Square, Perry Park, and Capuano School.

 

Shoplifters prefer Prada

Police responded to a reported shoplifting incident at Pearl Vision in Somerville’s Twin City Plaza last week. Store personnel reportedly told investigating officers that a man and a woman had been browsing in the store and walked off with an expensive pair of Prada sunglasses.

SHS Freshman Girls Volleyball defeats Everett

The Freshman Highlanders achieved a resounding victory over Everett on Friday, October 14, winning easily in two sets, 25-12, 25-13.

In the first set, Alba Haxhimali had a string of nine unanswered service points and Kathleen Almeida had 7 unanswered service points. The first set also included Oneda Lalaj, Jennifer Leone, Deidre Matthews, and Midardley Joseph.
