Somerville man and woman arrested for stealing Christmas packages

A man and a woman, both residents of Somerville, were arrested this afternoon in connection with an investigation into multiple package thefts from area residences.  In recent days, Somerville Police and other greater Boston Police Departments have been investigating reports of thieves taking advantage of the seasonal spike in express deliveries by stealing packages from porches and doorways.  Acting on information from the Medford Police Department, Somerville officers today stopped a vehicle at Pearl Street and McGrath Highway that matched the description of a car suspected of involvement with the theft of packages from area homes.  The officers immediately noticed that the car was full of boxes marked for delivery to a variety of local addresses.  Manuel Sheehan, age 27, and Kristen Casey, age 26, both of Somerville, were placed under arrest for receiving stolen property.

Wallace Dornevil, 28, of 267 River, Waltham, December 12, 5:49 p.m., arrested at 40 Memorial Rd. on warrant charges of operation of a motor vehicle with a suspended registration, unregistered motor vehicle, and uninsured motor vehicle or trailer.

Somerville awarded $75K for youth prevention intiatives

75K over next three years for Somerville youth prevention initiatives, with a special focus on females

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and Somerville Cares About Prevention (SCAP) are pleased to announce a $25,000 grant, renewable for three years, awarded to SCAP to fund youth-focused prevention initiatives in Somerville.  Awarded by The Community Health Network – Area 17 and supported by the City of Somerville, the Somerville Health Department, and the Somerville Office of Prevention, the grant will provide funds to support projects that address a variety of identified health priorities including substance abuse, bullying, mental health and youth access to services through the promotion of social norms and utilizing social marketing strategies promoted through social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Somerville’s 15th Annual Illuminations Tour

The annual Illuminations Trolley Tour of East and Central Somerville is scheduled for Saturday, December 17th, with 27 tours departing from the City Hall Concourse beginning at 4:30pm.  The 45-minute tours visit Somerville neighborhoods with holiday lights displays.  Tours leave from (and return to) Somerville City Hall where coffee, hot chocolate, and cookies are served. Entertainment at City Hall includes choral music, courtesy of the Somerville Community Chorus and craft activities for children.
