It goes without saying that we all want a safe and comfortable place for our kids to be taught and spend a large amount of their time away from home. The question before us now is whether or not we should renovate the aging Somerville High School or build anew.

Somerville high school seniors and parents seek funds to cover the costs of college tuition. During the eighth annual FAFSA day on Jan. 29 several families were helped by volunteers to learn about the application process for the financial aid program.

My name is Maria Curtatone and I am running for Middlesex South Register of Deeds. I am a practicing attorney and small business owner with my own firm. I have worked in Middlesex County and the surrounding area for the last 25 years. I bring to this job strong administrative skills, leadership and a commitment to public service.

I am a lover of irony. It seems that a Somerville Bagel Bard Zvi A. Sesling (Who resides in Brookline) lobbied and spurred the city on to have a Brookline Poet Laureate. I told him about the lack of interest in our beloved burg and it inspired him to get one for his town…they finally saw the light. The light in Somerville is still way, way at the end of the tunnel…sadly. Here is an article by Sesling about how he did it…

The  young Saint Clement Lady Anchors continued their winning streak by grabbing wins against Mount Saint Joseph Academy and Trinity Catholic upping their overall record to 6-8. On Tuesday, Jan. 24 against Mount Saint Joseph, St. Clement were leading  21 to 13 at the half.  While St. Joes continued to cut the lead, St. Clement was able to hold on to win 40-38.

This is February 1st but let’s not forget January. The month that brings in the new year. This year it has been a forgiving month–mild and with little snow. So  poet Valerie Quercia Prescott brings it all home with her poem.

Six-Term Alderman Cites Financial, Customer Service and Government Expertise as Key Qualifications in Bid to Serve as Southern Middlesex County Register of Deeds

Ward 2 Alderman Maryann Heuston today announced her candidacy for Southern Middlesex County Register of Deeds, and was immediately endorsed by current Register Eugene C. Brune, who is stepping down after 24 years in office.  Heuston has served as a Somerville alderman for twelve years, including five years as Chair of the Board’s Finance Committee.  She currently works as Director of Ambulatory Business Operations for the Cambridge Health Alliance.

Leslie Pine, 46, of 93 Temple St., January 24, 8:47 a.m., arrested at home on warrant charges receiving stolen property, disorderly conduct, and number plate violation.

LeVar Burton, actor, entertainer and the host and executive producer of the highly acclaimed PBS children’s television series “Reading Rainbow,” will be honored at Tufts University’s sixth Eliot-Pearson Awards for Excellence in Children’s Media. The awards ceremony, which is free and open to the public, will take place on February 3 at 10 a.m. in the Distler Performance Hall at the Granoff Music Center on Tufts University’s Medford/Somerville campus.
