This past Saturday, September 29, Mayor Joseph Curtatone and the Somerville Veteran’s Services Department dedicated the new memorial square located at the intersection of Miller and Sacramento Streets in honor of Richard Charles Clark. Clark served during the Korean War era from 1951 to 1954. His family, friends and elected officials were in attendance at the ceremony to celebrate the event. Girls Soccer
The St. Clement Girls Soccer team improved their overall record to 3-6 by shocking Catholic Central League rival Pope John High School 4 to 1. Sophomore standout Taisha Dupree continued her impressive start to the season scoring two goals. Senior captains Jessie Jepson (Somerville) and Maria Martinez (Medford) each scored a goal as well to pace the anchors. Next up for the girls was Lynn Technical High School. This game was a hard fought game by both teams. Sophomore goalie Krystal Coccimiglio made some phenomenal saves to record yet another shutout. But Krystal would not have been able to do this without the help of sophomore sweeper Amanda Andre (Medford) who was able to hold off almost all of Lynn Techs offensive attacks with a stellar defensive performance. Sophomore Taisha Dupree (Everett) scored the lone goal for the anchors. Unfortunately the Lady Anchors ran into a tough Innovation Charter School to end the week. But the girls are looking to keep improving as they have every week so far this season under the tutelage of veteran coach Kevin Conlin.

Manuel Leal, 32, of 344 Summer St., Malden, September 24, 9:01 p.m., arrested at Mystic Ave. on charges of giving a false name and speeding.

Somerville poet Rob Centore wrote to the LYRICAL: ” I wrote the following in 2008 while taking a poetry class at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, VT. I now live in Somerville and continue writing poetry and songs.”
Somerville Police are investigating an indecent assault and battery that occurred in theDavis Square area Monday evening. At about 8 p.m., a 32-year- old woman was walking from the Davis Square MBTA station to a nearby address. She exited the station through the rear of theHolland Street side. She proceeded to walk up Dover Street toward Cambridge while talking on her cell phone when she was approached from behind by an unknown suspect who indecently assaulted her. The victim turned around, saw the suspect and screamed while running into the street. The suspect immediately fled in the direction of Davis Square. The victim was not injured and required no medical treatment.

It was not an ordinary Saturday morning at the Bagel Bards meeting at the Au Bon Pain in Davis Square. A disgruntled artist sat down with us. The very one who is pursuing a lawsuit against one of our members who just happened to be present at the time. You could cut your bagel and the tension with a knife. So I was glad to go to a separate table with Maria Judge to discuss her new book.

Somerville firefighters were kept busy over the weekend with two fires on lower Broadway. On Saturday morning at 5:53 a.m. , September 29, fire broke out in a second floor apartment at 16 Broadway above the Mount Vernon Restaurant. The fire was confined to apartment #6 and activated the buildings sprinkler system. The fire appears to have originated in a waste basket and spread to a wall and cabinets. Sprinklers controlled the fire and arriving firefighters completed the extinguishment which required opening up a wall to check for fire spread. The occupant of the apartment was not at home at the time of the fire. The fire resulted in damage estimated to be in the area of $15,000. The cause of the fire is believed to be careless disposal of smoking materials. Firefighters cleared the scene by 7:25 a.m.

On October 1 at 8:23 a.m. the Somerville Fire Department responded to a serious gas main break at the rear of 3 Maxwells Green located just beneath the Lowell Street bridge. A contractor digging holes for new tree plantings accidentally struck and ruptured a high pressure gas main. The contractor was able to shut off the flow of gas prior to the arrival of the gas company but not before gas entered the adjacent, newly constructed apartment building. Firefighters evacuated the building and ventilated any gas from inside. Lowell Street was closed by the Somerville Police between Vernon and Princeton Streets until the situation was brought under control. All fire companies cleared the scene at 9:59 a.m.

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and the Somerville Commission for Women announce the Annual Candlelight Vigil in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Wednesday, October 3 at 6 p.m. at the Somerville Public Safety Building, 220 Washington Street. The vigil will include a presentation of the new “Somerville Against Violence” banner by Shamrock Sign & Lettering Co. owner Tisha Sullivan.
