Race Includes Children’s “Fun Run,” Adult Race & Walk; Refreshments, Music, Activities Follow Race on City Hall Concourse

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone announced that the City’s annual Shape Up Somerville / Somerville Recreation Road Race will be held on Sunday, April 7, starting and ending at the Somerville High School concourse, 93 Highland Avenue.  The day will begin with a 1-mile children’s “Fun Run” at 10:30 a.m., followed by a 2.7-mile walk at 10:30 a.m. and a 2.7-mile adult race at 11:00 a.m.  Registration is open to all community members at a price of $5 for youth under age 10, and $20 for adults.  Price includes a commemorative t-shirt, refreshments and activities and light refreshments immediately following the adult race. Adult runners are also invited to a post-race celebration at Casey’s, located at 173 Broadway.

SCATV celebrates 30 years of service to Somerville

Somerville Community Access Television was incorporated in March 1983 by Mayor Gene Brune. The Mayor recognized the benefits of having a non-profit organization rather than the cable company provide media services to Somerville citizens. He and his Communications Director Howard Horton worked out the details of this new entity, Somerville Community Access Television, which was the first in Massachusetts and served as a model for access centers around the country. The Mayor’s vision was to provide a free-speech platform to Somerville residents, in the hope that it would promote healthy community conversations. Since then, thousands of Somerville residents have come to SCATV to learn video production skills to produce programs for their neighbors.

Two suspects arrested for armed home invasion

Shortly after 10:30 a.m., Somerville Police responded to 60 Derby Street for a report of a breaking and entering in progress.

Police officers arrived on the scene within one minute of receiving the call, and observed two suspects fleeing the area. Officers pursued on foot.

A home invasion took place in Somerville on Monday morning on Derby Street. Two gunmen fled the scene and were on the loose in Somerville. Police secured the area and placed the Healey School on lock down for a short period.

The Somerville Health Department and the Office of Somerville Commissions announce that this year’s award recipients for “Best Service Provider to Women” by the Somerville Commission for Women will be the Somerville Public Libraries for its commitment to families and children, and the “Somerville Woman of Excellence” award will be presented to Marylin Eastwood for her dedication to ESL classes and cultural programming for families at the Somerville Public Libraries.  Awards will be presented at the upcoming reception honoring Women’s History Month, held at the Lowell Street Visiting Nurses’ Association (VNA) on March 27th.  The event’s featured speaker is Dr. Karen Hacker of the Institute for Community Health.

Consuelo Perez, 49, is a Somerville artist who lives in Davis Square. She immigrated to the area in 1987 and has been part of the art community ever since. Perez refers to herself as, “the trouble-maker of the whole city.” But really, she’s just a friendly Peruvian artist who makes trash into treasure.

The late night cheering crowds shall grow silent as the softball season ends, and the lights shall go dark at Glen Park. Autumn is upon the doorstep of our East Somerville neighborhood.

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and the Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development invite all interested residents to submit their ideas for the city’s application to the “Working Cities Challenge,” a competition hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. The City of Somerville is eligible to compete for up to $700,000 – over the course of three years – to create cross-sector, system-level change that will improve the economic health and well-being of Somerville’s lower-income residents.  Somerville is one of 20 smaller cities throughout Massachusetts eligible to participate in the program.
