At the regular Board of Aldermen meeting on Thursday, May 23, Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and Aldermen Connolly, Cuff-Bastardi, Desmond, Heuston, O’Keefe, Sullivan and Trane introduced an ordinance that would set limits for campaign contributions made to any candidate or incumbent for public office in the City of Somerville by developers, contractors, lobbyists or individuals and organizations seeking to do business with the City including, financial assistance such as grants, loans or tax incentives from the City, or City contracts not awarded to the lowest bidder.

It was a very nice Memorial Day Parade this past Sunday. Congratulations to an old friend, Jim Legee, who was the parade marshal. What a nice guy. He worked for the City of Somerville for many years before retiring in Inspectional Services. We think the city Veterans Services Dept. picked a great guy to be honored this year, of course, along with all our other Veterans here in the Ville. We salute them.

The Somerville Lions Club Comedy Night got a sell-out crowd last week. With over a hundred twenty-five Somervillians in the audience, including forty-five seniors from Somerville’s Council on Aging, all who attended the event had a great time. The special guest star of the show, comedian Lenny Clark, kept the crowd laughing all night, and all for a good cause. Proceeds raised that evening went to benefit Lions Club Charities including help in finding a cure for blindness and to help cure diabetes.

SHS alumnus Antoinette Toussaint added yet another All-American title to her record of achievements.

Bikes and bike paths, love them or loathe them, they are here to stay. As far as Somerville is concerned, the first owner of a two-wheeled velocipede (or bicycle) was Willie Nickerson in the 1880s.
William E. Nickerson was one of the first chemical engineering graduates of MIT and married the daughter of a Winter Hill developer, Horace Partridge. Willie’s father-in-law built them a small house, laboratory, and shop on Partridge Avenue near Vernon Street where his research began.

Roz Puleo witnessed first hand the terrible impact of the Boston Marathon bombing.
Somerville resident Roz Puleo had never been in battle, but she knew right away something was wrong when she heard the first bomb explode at the 2013 Boston Marathon.
“I don’t know how, but I had a gut feeling that it was something bad,” said Puleo, a 2011 graduate of the MGH Institute of Health Professions School of Nursing, who was volunteering in one of the medical tents across the street from the Boylston Street finish line, about the infamous attack that killed three people on April 15.

We are glad to say Lo Galluccio, a Somerville Bagel Bard, and a published poet with Somerville’s Ibbetson Street Press (Hot Rain 2004), has been elected Cambridge Populist Poet. Lo has been in numerous issues of Ibbetson Street, was on the planning committee for the Grolier Poetry Room Reading Series, sponsored by the Ibbetson St Press and the Blind Elephant Press, and was a reader at the Somerville News Writers Festival founded by Timothy Gager and Doug Holder in 2003. She has also participated in many of our readings for the last decade…so glad for you Lo!
