Patsy’s Pastry Shop could close as early as the end of this month as plans to demolish the East Somerville landmark with a new five-story commercial and residential building move forward.

His name was Samuel Jaques, or “Colonel” Jaques to his friends and neighbors. During the mid 1800’s, he owned the biggest farm in Somerville, the Ten Hills Farm, which encompassed an impressive location with 600 acres overlooking the Mystic River. The Farm had a two hundred year history of notable owners, beginning with the first Governor of Massachusetts, John Winthrop, the first Governor of Connecticut, John Winthrop, Jr., two successful sea captains, and America’s first millionaire, Elias Hasket Derby.

Somerville man’s body discovered behind Norwood School

Police identified the body discovered behind a Norwood school last week as that of a 66-year-old Somerville resident.

Vincnet Lalli was identified using fingerprint analysis. His identity was confirmed last Thursday, a day after a woman walking her dog in the woods behind the Coakley Middle School discovered his body, which Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey said had “suffered massive trauma.”

Postal worker accused of stealing mail, gifts

image001(2)Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Malden Police Chief Kevin Molis informed the public today that a former postal worker has been charged with stealing more than 7,000 pieces of mail – including mail containing gift cards, cell phones, and Christmas cards and presents – from residents of Malden, Somerville, Medford and Melrose.

Somerville Public Schools will be closed Wednesday, Feb. 5.

In accordance with the City’s Snow Emergency Procedures, Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone has declared a snow emergency for the City of Somerville will go into effect at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4. During snow emergencies, parking is allowed on the odd-numbered side of the street only (unless otherwise posted).  Cars not moved by 12 a.m. Wednesday morning will be subject to ticketing and towing.  Residents unable to find a parking space on the odd-numbered side of the street may park in any municipal or school parking lot for the duration of the emergency.  Full snow emergency and snow removal policies may be found on the city’s website at www.somervillema.gov/snow
