The citations awarded to former Ward 3 alderman Tom Taylor last week – the longest-serving ward alderman in the city’s history – was filled with deep and sincere expressions of love and gratitude.
But it also came with plenty of laughs, such as the story Mayor Joe Curtatone shared about Taylor and his less-than-friendly relationship with the pigeons that nested under the McGrath Highway overpass (for all the obvious reasons).

“May Day” in this country is a day when the sight of budding trees and flowers tells us that winter is over and the children sing around the May poles to celebrate the arrival of spring. In other countries, like Russia, it’s a day of viewing parades and exhibiting national pride. Kate Smith would spend her life celebrating both of these practices. She was a singing patriot. She was born on May 1, 1907, May Day, and she died on June 17, 1986, Bunker Hill Day. Kathryn Elizabeth Smith grew up in the nation’s capital. At eight years old, she sang for World War I veterans and, while attending nursing school as a teen, she sang for patients.

The former Ward 3 alderman, now the city’s first “alderman emeritus,” was honored last week in an emotional ceremony during the opening portion of the Board of Aldermen’s meeting. While he holds the title of the city’s longest-serving ward aldermen, it was the quality of his service –and his character- that was truly the reason for the citations and certificates of appreciations given to him.

Police were dispatched to a Winter Hill Circle apartment complex last week on reports of a dispute between a landlord and a tenant.
Upon arrival, officers learned that the tenant, Anna Nikitenko, 29, had reportedly failed to pay her second month’s rent on a room that she was renting and the landlord put a lock on her door. It was for this reason that Nikitenko called the police.

Today the mayors of Boston, Cambridge, Quincy, Somerville, and Braintree announced the formation of the Life Sciences Corridor. The partnership, created by Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh, Cambridge Mayor David Maher, Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch, Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone, and Braintree Mayor Joseph C. Sullivan, will focus on promoting the robust life sciences sector along the MBTA red line in the Greater Boston region. An event for the announcement was held at the Museum of Science, a middle point between the five partnering cities.

Assembly Row, the area’s newest shopping, dining and entertainment destination, today announced that 32 outlets, restaurants and attractions will be opening as part of its “Grand Opening Season,” which runs from May through September. Additional outlets and restaurants will open during the fall, with more than 10 new tenants expected to open by Black Friday in November.
