On June 22, at the Uniun Warehouse in Somerville, the 2nd annual Trash Bash was held, a competition where art submitted had to be entirely made out of trash. Over 40 artists entered their work, for both the adult and youth competitions.
Jennifer Lawrence and Debra McLaughlin of ArtsUnion organized the Bash. McLaughlin said that about 25 percent of the artists there this year had participated the year before as well, although this year they had to submit different art.

In a packed house with more than 100 residents and the full Board of Alderman Finance Committee present, Somerville Public Schools Superintendent Tony Pierantozzi gave a detailed analysis of the district’s budget plan for fiscal year 2014 this past Thursday, June 19, 2014. Although myriad items have been included in this year’s city budget plan, the school system remains as the single biggest investment.

Tonight, Wednesday, June 25, The Committee on Public Health and Public Safety, chaired by Alderman At Large Jack Connolly, will hold a public hearing beginning at 6:30 p.m. Questions submitted by members of the public will be answered by the four finalists for the position of Somerville Police Chief. The finalists include Somerville Deputy Chief Michael Cabral; Somerville Deputy Chief David Fallon; Manchester, NH Chief David Mara; and Hamden, CT Chief Thomas Wydra. The meeting will last approximately two hours and the resumes of the candidates have been posted on the city’s website. Attend or submit your questions to the candidates for the job.

Boston Closet has won the championship series four years in a row.

Somerville’s Little League team, Boston Closet, won the championship playoffs Sunday afternoon at Conway Park, making them winners for the fourth year in a row. According to one parent, it’s all due to Coach Sean Sullivan.
“Every moment he’s with the kids, whether during the game or in practice, is a moment of enlightenment,” said John Sanbonmatsu, parent of Boston Closet player, Emmanuel Sanbonmatsu, the day before the final game. “Some of these kids had never played baseball before in their lives. They had never thrown a ball, or tried to hit one, or catch one. Yet here they are, in the championships!”

Police responded to reports of a fight in progress on Alewife Brook Pkwy. Sunday evening.
Upon arrival, officers were informed by witnesses that the fight had broken up just before they arrived on the scene. A patrol of the area was conducted in spite of the witness accounts.

The community, the City and its staff and the Somerville Redevelopment Authority deserve commendation for leading a thoughtful public discourse on which development team is most qualified to partner with us on the redevelopment of Union Square. This decision will shape the future of Union Square, our City and indeed the region.

The Somerville Kiwanis met at The Mount Vernon Restaurant on Thursday, June 12, for a special meeting honoring 10 long-time members who have made outstanding contributions to the club and the Somerville community. The induction into The Kiwanis Legion Of Honor was organized by Kiwanis President Rui Domingos and Past President Jay Lynch presided as Master Of Ceremonies to a packed audience of current Kiwanis members.
