The Eversource Walk for Boston Children’s Hospital took place this past Sunday at DCR’s Baxter Park, Assembly Row in Somerville. People from all over the area took part in the special fundraising event.

I met Esther Hanig, the new Executive Director of Union Square Main Streets at my usual comfortable perch at the Bloc11 Café in Union Square, Somerville. As head of Main Streets, Hanig will oversee the continued advocacy and promotion of the Union Square business district and neighborhood. The organization’s mission is to preserve the vibrancy of Union Square and promote dialogue between business owners, landlords and residents.

For the third time, the City of Somerville has been named All-America City by the National Civic League. The city has previously held the title in 2009 and 1972.
The Somerville delegation competed to be one of 10 All-America City Award winners in Denver Colorado from June 12-14. Other cities chosen for membership this year are Carson, California; Salinas, California; Stockton, California; Tallahassee, Florida; Tupelo, Mississippi; Geneva, New York; Marshall, Texas; Spokane, Washington; and Yakima, Washington.

On Monday, June 15, the university along with Somerville, Medford, and State public safety teams, will conduct a routine emergency preparedness training exercise. Starting at 7 a.m. police vehicles, ambulances, and fire engines will be deployed on and near campus. All activities will be simulated. They are not a response to an actual emergency. Emergency vehicles taking part in the training will not use lights or sirens when moving about, but may use them within the restricted exercise area. The exercise is scheduled to end at noon, but emergency vehicles will be on campus into the afternoon while participants review the exercise. The exercise will be similar to an exercise held 2 years ago. Activities will require that Professors Row be closed from College Avenue to Packard Avenue from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Tisch Library will be closed until 2 p.m. For more information visit emergency.tufts.edu.

I witnessed two different sporting events last Saturday: my daughter playing softball at Foss Park, where the ground was so dry and dusty, and the wind so strong, that waves of dust would roll across the park and everyone had to face away from it to not get dirt in their eyes. We came home with dust in our eyes, ears, and mouths. We are still chewing grit.

Statement from City of Somerville, Somerville Police Department, and Somerville Fire Department
On Thursday, June 11, at 2:02 p.m., Somerville Fire and Somerville Police responded to a report of an accident at the Partners Healthcare administrative building construction site in Assembly Square. Two workers who suffered serious injuries while assembling an external hoist on the structure were given first aid by Somerville Police on scene and transported by Cataldo Ambulance to Mass General Hospital. We were later informed that one worker was fatally injured.
