With the historic snowfall that we’ve seen – the most in a seven day period since the National Weather Service began recording snowfall 143 years ago – residents have had many questions directed to the city through Facebook, Twitter and 311 about snow operations, parking rules, and more. With more than 60 inches of snow so far, the amount that has fallen presents unique challenges, and the city is aware of and concerned about the difficulties residents are facing.

Somerville Schools closed for remainder of the week

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and Superintendent of Schools Tony Pierantozzi announced today that Somerville Public Schools will be closed through the end of the week, to allow for the safe removal of an average depth of two-to-three feet of snow from many school and municipal buildings with drifting up to six feet in some roof locations following the recent historic snowfall. Roofing contractors and experts have been on-site since Wednesday morning along with the city’s Capital Projects Management team and will conduct necessary assessments of structural safety over the next several days before schools will reopen.

The Tufts Jumbos men’s basketball team went head-to-head against Williams College on Saturday, falling to the Ephs in an 80-75 nail-biting loss. But Saturday’s game against Williams was unlike any previous game this season – it was also an opportunity to raise awareness on autism as part of a nationwide campaign.

The event was attended by city officials, business and civic group leaders, local developers, and residents. According to Sandra L. McGoldrick, President/CEO of Winter Hill Bank, the wide range of well-wishers represents the bank’s strong and across-the-board ties with Somerville.

Somerville Police Honor Guard and Collier Family

plaque_collierdedication_2015Somerville Police Officer Sean Collier dedication organized by retired Somerville Police Officer John O’Connor & Deputy Chief Stephen Carrabino took place at the Somerville Police Department on Saturday January 31, 2015. Officer Collier was murdered by the Boston Marathon bombers in April 2013.B.A. Event Promotions was able to donate the funds necessary for the dedication plaque, from tremendous support of their events in Worcester, Hyannis, Harwich, Cambridge & Somerville. Sean worked many charity road races put on by many different organizations in Somerville, Massachusetts as an officer with the Somerville Auxiliary Police Department as well as his distinguished service as a police officer with the MIT Police Department, It was a sad day on Saturday but a good day to be able to dedicate the plaque at the Somerville Police Department to a wonderful person committed to community service.

Desperately Seeking Spring

Oh no, there it is again, a weather forecast of another snowstorm hitting the northeast over the weekend and affecting the Monday morning commute. I know, I know, I live in New England, but when the estimate of snowfall is in feet, not inches, spring can’t get here fast enough. And, under the circumstances, there’s only one thing to do, go grocery shopping of course. After all, I must get the bread and milk!
