Before Vice-Admiral Ralph Waldo Christie left the U.S. Navy in 1949, he had spent thirty-eight years working his way up the ranks. The Somerville native graduated from the Naval Academy in 1915. As an Ensign, he had various duties. His first ship assignment was on the battleship, New Jersey, where he received instruction on submarine construction and torpedo design. This prepared him for the newly opened Submarine School in New London, Connecticut, becoming one of its first members. By 1923, he had earned a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Somerville Street Sweeping Resumes April 1

street sweeperThe street sweeping parking enforcement season resumes tonight at midnight, the beginning of Wednesday, April 1, and residents are reminded that they must adhere to posted schedules, and move vehicles to the appropriate side of the road on sweeping days. Street sweeping schedules are posted on signs on every street that is swept in Somerville. Failure to comply with street sweeping parking regulations will result in a $50 fine.

Barrels can be purchased through April 4, 2015 by visiting www.greatamericanrainbarrel.com/c-124-somerville.aspx. Somerville residents may purchase the barrels at a discounted cost of $79 (compared to $119 regular retail price). Barrels are available in Forest Green, Earth Brown, or Nantucket Gray.

Otis Street Playground meeting April 1

Curtatone, Ward 1 Alderman Matt McLaughlin, and the Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development (OSPCD) invite all interested community members to the third Otis Street Playground community meeting to review the three draft plans, and to select the components which will be included in the final plan. The meeting will be held at the East Somerville Community School Auditorium, 50 Cross St., on Wed., April 1 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.  Please join us to help shape the design of the new playground. Spanish and Portuguese interpreters will be available. Construction at the playground is scheduled to start this summer.
