Somerville one of only 10 nationwide winners; 2015 award recognized City’s support for local youth; All-America City banner to be unfurled at Fireworks on July 2.

The National Civic League announced this week that for the third time since its inception in 1949, the City of Somerville, Massachusetts, is a recipient of the coveted All-America City Award, widely considered one of the most prestigious awards bestowed upon cities. The annual award (aka “the Academy Award for cities”) celebrates and recognizes communities that engage residents in innovative, inclusive and effective efforts to tackle critical challenges. Somerville is one of only ten winners nationwide, and the only community from New England, to have been selected as a finalist in 2015. Somerville previously won the award in 2009, and 1972.

The East Somerville Community School Spring Concert took place on Friday, June 19 in the school auditorium. Students played instruments and sang for the appreciative crowd of attendees.

Argenziano School hosted the Arbor Day Celebration presented by the MA Department of Conservation and Recreation last week. Several students from around the Somerville school district participated in the associated poster contest.

On Friday, June 19, at 10:00 a.m., the MA Department of Conservation and Recreation held an Arbor Day Celebration at the Argenziano School to present awards to the 2015 Massachusetts Arbor Day Poster Contest winners, including three students from the Somerville Public Schools.

Middle grades students at East Somerville Community School participated in a special project at the school auditorium on June 16.

Summer officially kicks off this weekend with the annual Family Fun Day in Somerville on Saturday, June 27, from noon to 4 p.m. at Trum Field. Summertime in Somerville from June to September will include annual favorite events and series as well as some new programs for residents of all ages. Following Family Fun Day, the City will host its annual Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration at Trum Field on Thursday, July 2.

To prepare to reopen both lanes of Elm St., crews will need to fully close Elm St. on Saturday morning, June 27, between 4 a.m. and approximately 7 a.m. During this time, jersey barriers will be shifted to the parking lane in front of 240 Elm St. to create a temporary pedestrian walkway as construction continues.

On Saturday, June 20, about 80 to 100 residents and jazz fans attended Joe’s Jazz and Blues Festival 2015 at Powderhouse Park. The crowd enjoyed live bands and lots of music. Everyone seemed to enjoy this nice Saturday afternoon of music, which seemed like an old fashion band concert.
