Ward 2 Alderman Maryann M. Heuston successfully put through a resolution to provide child care services for families that wish to attend public meetings.

A resolution sponsored by Ward 2 Alderman Maryann M. Heuston that the Administration arrange child care during city-sponsored meetings, especially the fall ResiStat meetings, all Union Square planning meetings, and the yet-to-be scheduled Lincoln Park Neighborhood meeting was brought forward at the Board of Aldermen’s regular meeting last Thursday evening, October 8.

Activist bands from around the world converged on Somerville over the weekend, spreading joyful noise and good cheer.

New Creations Band from New Orleans performed at the Edgerly School, while the main event took place in Davis Square with more than 30 bands performing.

The public had an opportunity to weigh in on the proposed Plastic Bag Reduction Ordinance as the city’s Legislative Matters Committee listened to concerns and ideas from those wishing to speak at the meeting.

This year, The Little Sisters of the Poor, Jeanne Jugan Residence on Highland Ave., have been celebrating serving the Elderly Poor in Somerville for 125 years. The home has seen and cared for thousands of elderly over the years including multi-generations of families and the Sisters hope to continue their tradition for many years to come.

The Somerville Health and Human Services Department has scheduled the first two public flu vaccination clinics of the season. Clinics are open for Somerville residents and non-residents. While there is no charge for vaccinations, attendees are asked to bring an insurance card if available. Please wear clothing that allows easy access to the upper arm. Attendees requiring additional assistance or other accommodations should contact the Somerville Health Department at 617-625-6600 ext. 4300. More clinics will be scheduled as vaccine becomes available.

Saturday, October 17 at the Holiday Inn, the SHS Scholarship Foundation will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary. Over the years, the foundation has been responsible for handing out thousands of dollars in scholarships to deserving high school graduates. The Foundation idea was started by local publisher Robert J. L. Publicover, Tony Fedele, the headmaster at the high school, former Mayor Gene Brune and several other dedicated and committed community people.
