The Somerville High School Science Department invites parents/guardians, younger students and their families, teachers, and community members, to the 2016 SHS Science & Engineering Fair Exhibition Night on Thursday, March 3, from 4:30-6:00pm. Come view student science fair research projects and listen to student presentations. Visitors will be able to view the projects at their leisure from 4:30-5:30pm and an informal awards ceremony will follow at 5:30pm at the SHS Auditorium. A host will greet you at the school’s main entrance and escort you up to the science project area.
As a culminating activity to their poetry unit, second grade students at the Winter Hill Community Innovation School presented a “Poetry Slam” on Friday, February 12th. Students highlighted their poetry writings with eloquent ‘performances’ of their poetry in front of an appreciative audience. Parents were in attendance, along with fifth grade book buddies.

Political Icon Tip O’Neill coined the phrase, All Politics is Local. Even in a presidential election knocking on doors and manning the phones to ask for votes is an integral part of the campaign. SNN hits the sidewalk with some volunteer campaigners. Two thirds of Somerville residents are renters, and many of those are young and have no ties to the city, and no political involvement. Getting young voters to participate is good for them and for the process. Young Somerville takes on the issue.

The Somerville High School Girls basketball team played their last game of the season Monday night at the SHS field House. Newburyport won the game but the girls played hard all year and look forward to playing again next year. Six senior players were presented with roses before the game.

Let me tell you a story about math, karma, and candy. It’s sweeter than it sounds, I promise. You see, I work at a candy store, and this particular candy store started a jellybean counting contest. We had a bunch of old jelly beans and put them in a giant martini glass, and we charged people fifty cents to guess how many beans were in there. The winner got a $50 gift certificate for the store. It was a fifty for fifty guess lotto. They never told me how many were in there, and I am pretty sure employees couldn’t guess anyways.

The City of Somerville’s Youth Arts Coordinator, Jimmy Del Ponte, announces three FREE opportunities for Somerville youth looking to learn to play the guitar or piano, or how to write songs. Somerville residents ages 12 and older are invited to apply for these ongoing programs, though space is limited. Massachusetts State Attorney General and former Somerville Pride Coach Maura Healey held a girls basketball clinic at the Somerville High School Gymnasium on Tuesday, February 16. Girls of all ages were treated to a skills and activities session, as well as a motivational speech on pursuing excellence by A.G. Healey. The event was sponsored by Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and the Somerville Recreation Department.
