A: If you take Social Security at age 65, you automatically get put into Medicare. Unfortunately the retirement age is now 66 and if you wait until then to take Social Security, you’ll likely need to prepare for Medicare at age 64 on your own, and a lot of people don’t realize that.

Potential candidates for public office here in Somerville this year have until Monday, June 26, to obtain nomination papers. The final date to submit them with the required signatures is Wednesday, June 28. The certification of nomination papers to be completed, filed by the Board of Election Commissioners by July 17.

Reluctant used clothing dealer

I hunt for jewelry in ladies’ used clothing stores. I used to cause panic whenever I walked into the stores as I lack a gene for fashion and I’m a guy.

The new staff, not knowing me, would always look at me with horror as I walked up to the jewelry counter. I would recognize the look and announce that I buy and sell things, I’m not here to try on any size 16 outfits.

Plan to identify strategies for reducing Somerville’s impact on climate change and preparing city for its impacts

Members of the Somerville community concerned about climate change and determined to stick to the goals of the Paris Climate Accord, have a direct opportunity to get involved locally. On June 26th, the City of Somerville will launch the next phase of their planning process to create a new climate change plan. The plan, called Somerville Climate Forward, will serve as the city’s comprehensive strategy for addressing climate change. Somerville Climate Forward will identify actionable short- and medium-term policies, projects, and programs around two key goals:

Investments in a new high school, the Green Line extension, sewer improvements, and Union-Square and Boynton-Yards infrastructure will commit Somerville to borrowing a third of a billion dollars. A Massachusetts Infrastructure Bank could help ease the burden on the city’s taxpayers. And Somerville Representatives Denise Provost and Mike Connolly are cosponsoring a bill that would create such an institution.

Somerville High School teacher Kevin Dua (pictured right) has recently been recognized for his excellence in teaching both history and civics.

Somerville High School history teacher Kevin Dua has been selected as the 2017 Massachusetts History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

A panel of teachers, administrators, and scholars from Massachusetts selected Dua for his outstanding work in the classroom, the level of inspiration he provides to students, and his career achievements in education. He was also recently awarded the 2017 Don Salvucci Award for Excellence in Promoting Civic Education by the Massachusetts Council for Social Studies.

Tipsy driver couldn’t squeak through

A police unit was dispatched to a Cedar Ave. residence last Saturday at approximately 3:15 a.m. on reports of a motor vehicle accident.

Upon arrival, the officers noted what initially looked like normal parking conditions located in a two-car driveway next to a home.
