On Wednesday, July 19, over one hundred children from the Boston and Somerville Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools^® summer program sites led a march focusing on child hunger in the United States.

So, what’s going on here? Why is it taking so long to get something substantial done in the way of reducing noise from aircraft coming out of Logan airport?

Ask these questions of a Massport or FAA representative and a slew of reasonable sounding explanations are offered. Flight paths can vary according to environmental conditions, overall level of activity at Logan International Airport, and any number of other factors.

Alexander Graham Bell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Somerville’s fifth birthday, March 3, 1847. Thirty years later, after moving to America, he became the recipient of the United States Patent #174465. This is often considered the most valuable patent ever granted. It acknowledged him as the inventor of the telephone and father of its industry.

When you’re putting together your summer BBQ guest list don’t forget Mayor Joe Curtatone. This summer he’s hoping a few residents will invite him over to talk about city issues, policies, or whatever else is on their minds as part of the Mayor In My Backyard (MIMBY) program. (If you don’t have a backyard, that’s OK. Living rooms, kitchen tables, porches, and patios are all great too.)

Paradise Lost: A Movement Collective hosts the More Than Moves Festival 2017 this Thursday at the Rockwell Theater in Davis Square.

Back for its second annual community showcase, Paradise Lost: A Movement Collective and other Boston-based artists will perform at the More Than Moves Festival 2017 on Thursday, July 27, 8:00 p.m., at the Rockwell Theater in Somerville. All proceeds from the event will benefit Transition House, Cambridge’s domestic violence agency for community education, outreach, and intervention.

The Somerville High School Girls Basketball Board congratulates the new Somerville High School Varsity Coach, Sheila Freitas-Haley, and wishes her luck in the 2017-18 season.

Many a Somervillian will be heading to the Cape this summer. I will be heading to that enclave of artists and writers, Provincetown, on the tip of Cape Cod. Christopher Busa, the founder of the magazine Provincetown Arts sent me the latest edition. So I decided to write an appreciation of it.

Somerville Bagel Bard and Brookline Poet Laureate Zvi A. Sesling sent us this poem about the late poet Harry Weldon Kees. Kees was an American poet, painter, literary critic, novelist, playwright, jazz pianist, short story writer, and filmmaker.

Hanoria (O’Connor) Sullivan  of  Somerville, originally from County Kerry, Town of Killorglin, Ireland, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at her home on July 20, 2017. Beloved wife of the late Joseph J. Sullivan. Loving mother of Dennis and his wife Melissa, Daniel, Maureen, Joseph and the late Jeremiah Sullivan. Sister of Mary Travers and her husband Robert, Bridie Woulfe and her husband William and Johnny O’Connor and his wife Mary. Mother-in-law of Shelia Sullivan.
