In honor of the city’s 175th anniversary, the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission, the Somerville Bicycle Committee and the Community Preservation Committee are teaming up for a city-wide bicycle tour to let people learn more about the city’s history.

Police officers were dispatched to a MacArthur St. residence in the early hours of Sunday on reports of an unwanted person.
Upon arrival, the officers were met by the reporting party, who appeared to be shaken and visibly upset, saying that she saw an intruder, later identified as Nicholas Stiles, in her room with what appeared to be a flashlight.

Taking a closer look at notable city data – and interesting numbers.
20 percent of the snow season budget: It’s already October, which means we’re starting to get the first hints of winter, but for DPW, winter is already here. To date, the department has encumbered 20 percent of the FY18 snow season budget for planned expenses like purchasing new vehicle parts, tires, snow plows, tools, and making repairs to the fleet so that they’re ready and able to clear the streets and sidewalks in a timely fashion once that first snowfall arrives.

The 12th annual Honk! Festival this weekend, bringing brass and sass to Somerville, along with a touch political activism and social awareness.

The Honk! Festival is returning to the Somerville streets on October 6. For 12 years, Honk! has brought brass bands from around the world, giving them a voice to represent the causes that are important to them. This year, the 28 bands are coming from as far as Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

On Tuesday, November 7, 2017, Somerville voters will cast their ballots in a City Election for the offices of Mayor of Somerville, various Board of Aldermen members, and School Committee Members in Wards 1 and 2. This week, the Somerville Times asked each of the qualified candidates for the School Committee to describe why they would be the best choice for the office they are running for and what specific policies they would advocate or implement in that position, along with a bio if they choose to include one. Their responses are presented here in alphabetical order based on their last names, beginning with the Ward 1 candidates, followed by the Ward 2 candidates.

Tonight, Wednesday October 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Ward 3 Alderman Bob McWatters will be having a campaign get together and fundraiser at Sally O’Brien’s on Somerville Ave. The last time his opponent sent spies to monitor the event. Alderman McWatters is a good person. He’s being accused of taking money from developers, but maybe some unopposed candidates might want to stop spreading lies. They might find an opponent in two years that they might not like.
