Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, Ward 6 Alderman Lance Davis, and the City of Somerville Engineering Department invite residents to a community meeting. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss upcoming construction to drainage systems abutting a portion of the Community Path. The meeting will be held on Thursday, November 2, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Baptist Church at 31 College Ave. Impacted sections include the area between Willow Ave. and Grove St., and along portions of Winslow Ave.

Portion of the Community Path to close for repairs in November

Community Path (Buena Vista Rd. to Cambridge Line) expected to be closed for approximately one month during excavation. Detour routes available at www.somervillema.gov/detours

The City of Somerville’s Engineering Department announced this week that a portion of the Community Path, between Buena Vista Rd. and the Cambridge line, will undergo much anticipated repairs to the drainage system and a retaining wall to address recurring flooding issues and improve safety along the path. Bicycle and pedestrian traffic will be detoured for approximately one month, beginning in mid-November, as crews excavate in this area. Detour routes can be found at www.somervillema.gov/detours, and will be posted on sawhorses along this section of the path over the next several weeks.

Aging Well highlights New Memory Café

A free social gathering for people with forgetfulness or memory loss was recently featured on Aging Well, a monthly production of Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES).

The Cambridge Connections Memory Café was launched in August, with the goal of providing a social outlet for people with memory loss and their caregivers, explained SCES Clinical Director Annie Fowler.

A Whale of a Tail Table

Years ago, I was out picking through people’s trash in swank Arlington. I had waited until after sunset to go out in my pick-up truck.

I went to the Friendlies on Broadway, got a fribble and planned on cruising for a few hours up and down the streets looking for a nice score. I drove up on a promising looking pile in front of a well-kept single family house that had a for sale sign on the lawn. I parked and grabbed a small flashlight.

Students enjoy corn shucking event

Somerville’s annual corn shucking event earlier this month had students, staff members, parents/guardians, and community volunteers from Groundwork Somerville, Shape Up Somerville, UMass Extension, and Tufts shuck about 3,500 ears of “grown in New England” ears of corn! The corn came from Stamp Farms, a family-owned and operated farm in Rhode Island (www.stampfarms.com).
