City Council President Lance Davis said at the latest City Council meeting that the legal issues concerning recognition of the DSNC have been settled.

The Somerville City Council voted unanimously on September 24 to formally recognize the Davis Square Neighborhood Council.

The non-profit organization works to provide the community with “a direct seat at the table with private developers and city officials looking to reshape the square,” according to its website.

City Council President Lance Davis said at the City Council meeting that legitimate questions were raised during the process regarding “technical legality” and “conceptual appropriateness,” but that in his view and the view of the law department, the legal issues were “settled.”

Davis added, “The intent is to give these organizations broad leeway and really allow them to determine what’s appropriate.”

Several City Councilors expressed concerns at the September 15 Legislative Matters Committee with regard to the catchment area that is within a half-mile of the neighborhood boundary and includes neighboring cities.
