Tenants, community members, and housing advocates will come together on Saturday, September 12, for a march for tenants’ rights followed by a community picnic celebrating the strength and solidarity of Somerville’s tenant unions.

The event, organized by Community Action Agency of Somerville (CAAS) and community partners, will begin at 3:30 PM at Somerville City Hall with a march for tenants’ rights. Participants will march together to the Growing Center, where the community will gather for a celebration beginning at 4:00 PM.

The march comes as housing costs continue to put pressure on tenants across Somerville and Massachusetts. Organizers are also highlighting the continued fight for rent control and other policies designed to protect tenants from displacement and rising housing costs.

Community Picnic & Tenant Union Celebration

4:00 PM — The Growing Center, 22 Vinal Ave., Somerville

Following the march, participants will gather at the Growing Center for an afternoon of food, music, community, and fun activities celebrating Somerville’s tenant unions and the organizing work happening across the city.

The event will provide an opportunity for tenants, organizers, families, and community members to connect, celebrate the progress made through collective action, and build relationships for the continued fight for safe, stable, and affordable housing.

Community members are encouraged to bring a friend and RSVP in advance so organizers can plan for food and activities.
