If you’ve been watching the FIFA World Cup and wanting to score a goal like a pro player, you’re not alone. The SomerCup hosted three one-day tournaments at Dilboy Stadium that ended on July 17. There was a kids’ division, kindergarten to 18 years old, and an adults’ division, 18 years old and over. The tournament was preceded by a training session with the New England Revolution.
“This is the first one that we’ve been doing,” said Ohemeng Kyeremateng, Director of Parks and Recreation. “We’ll look to do more maybe every year.”
Kyeremateng developed the event “inspired by the World Cup” in the hopes of bringing “different communities and different parts of our neighborhood all into one event.” There were between 12 and 15 players signed up on each team. On the first day of the tournament, there were 12 different teams competing against each other.
There was additional training provided for those who signed up. “We had about four or five Revolution academy coaches who led them through drills,” said Connor Davis, Corporate Relationship Executive for the New England Revolution. “They worked on passing drills, dribbling skills, shooting, and then a little scrimmage.”
“I’ve been in recreation for over a decade, and this has been one of the most fun, enjoyable community-building events I’ve ever been a part of,” said Kyeremateng.
