New shared-use path along Blessing of the Bay Park to bring new waterfront access
A greener, more connected waterfront area is taking shape in Somerville. Community members are invited to a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, June 12, at Blessing of the Bay Park (32 Shore Dr.) at 11 a.m. to kick off construction of the Shore Drive Greenway.
The project consists of a 12-foot-wide shared path to be constructed through Blessing of the Bay Park, providing easier access to the Mystic River and nearby jobs, public transit, and community resources.
The climate resilient design features 85 new trees, and 1,520 sq ft of native plantings. Underground green stormwater infrastructure will lower urban heat levels, improve air quality, capture carbon, and buffer traffic noise for both commuters and recreational users. Construction is scheduled to begin in June.
This project is funded by the Massachusetts EOEEA Municipal Vulnerability Fund (MVP), MassTrails, the Somerville Community Preservation Act (CPA), and the Solomon Foundation.
