Close to 200 innovators from across Somerville’s business communities gathered at Greentown Labs on April 29 for an evening of conversation with Mayor Jake Wilson. Hosted by Somernova and Greentown Labs in partnership with the Somerville Chamber of Commerce, the event marked one of the mayor’s first engagements of its kind and highlighted the city’s momentum as a hub for climate and energy innovation, entrepreneurship, and community-driven growth.
The informal meet and greet brought together founders, investors, small business owners, and community stakeholders, creating space for direct dialogue with city leadership.
Conversations throughout the evening underscored Somerville’s emergence as a global leader in climate and energy technology, highlighting the city’s unique role in supporting companies from inception through scale. “We’re proud that many of our startups don’t just start here – they grow here,” said Georgina Campbell Flatter, CEO of Greentown Labs. “They’re putting down roots, creating good jobs, and contributing to the local economy. What we’ve built together is not just local. We’re shaping the future of energy, industry, and climate solutions.”
Attendees also engaged directly with city officials on practical considerations such as permitting, processes, and pathways for growth, able to get answers on the day-to-day realities of building and operating a business.
“Tonight showcases how innovation and community grow together,” said Kristin Phelan, Vice President of Real Estate at Rafi Properties, owner and operator of Somernova. “That collaborative spirit will fuel Somerville’s growth as a leading global climate and energy hub, proving that when community is at the center, innovation can drive both economic growth and meaningful local impact.”
