Mayor Jake Wilson has signed a proclamation supporting the City’s annual observance of “Start by Believing Day” in Somerville on the first Wednesday in April, recognizing the importance of believing survivors of sexual violence and strengthening community response.
The proclamation highlights the critical role that friends, family members, and community members play when survivors first come forward, noting that victims are far more likely to disclose assaults to someone they know rather than law enforcement. It also underscores the need for compassionate, informed responses that connect survivors to support and resources.
The “Start By Believing” campaign is a global initiative led by End Violence Against Women International (EVAWI) to transform the way society responds to sexual assault. In Somerville, City departments and community organizations are joining together to take the pledge and support a cultural shift that prioritizes survivor support.
