The City of Somerville is seeking three (3) new members to join the Somerville Commission for Persons with Disabilities (SCPD). If you’re passionate about making sure the vital protections in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for individuals with disabilities are preserved, this is a great opportunity to make an impact.

What is the Somerville Commission for Persons with Disabilities? 

The Somerville Commission for Persons with Disabilities is committed to ensuring equity and inclusion for Somerville residents, workers, and visitors. The SCPD works closely with the City’s Department of Racial and Social Justice and ADA Coordinator to carry out its mission and ensure all are welcomed.

Who Can Join?

Eligible applicants for the current vacancies must be residents of Somerville and identify as a person with a disability or a family member of a person with a disability.

What is the Time Commitment?

Currently, the SCPD conducts hybrid meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m., with meetings typically lasting around two hours. Additional time for review of documents and occasional special meetings may be needed, for an estimated additional three  hours per month. These are volunteer positions.

What is the Appointment Process?

Members are appointed to three-year terms in a volunteer capacity. The SCPD is composed of 12 commissioners, with all members appointed by the Mayor following an interview panel.
