Practical leadership, Real Solutions, and a Stronger Voice for Ward 5

Jason Mackey today announced his candidacy for Somerville Ward 5 City Council. A local community advocate, entrepreneur, and experienced problem-solver, Mackey emphasized his commitment to pragmatic, results-driven leadership that will prioritize Ward 5’s unique needs and diverse community.

Mackey, who initially launched a mayoral campaign earlier this year, explained that he made the strategic decision to run for Ward 5 City Council after recognizing that he could have the greatest immediate impact by directly serving his own neighborhood.

“I entered the mayoral race because I care deeply about Somerville’s future,” said Mackey. “But as I listened to residents throughout our city, it became clear to me that the best way to serve right now is by fighting directly for my neighbors in Ward 5.”

On May 7, Mackey officially pulled papers to run for the Ward 5 seat.

Mackey’s campaign highlights practical solutions and inclusive leadership rather than ideological division. He outlined key priorities:

Affordable, Mixed-Income Housing: Championing development that includes middle- and working-class families, while protecting existing residents from displacement.

Infrastructure That Works: Prioritizing immediate repairs to roads, sidewalks, and parks, especially in historically overlooked areas like Magoun Square.

Unblocking Small Business Growth: Cutting red tape to make it easier for local entrepreneurs to open, operate, and thrive.

Transparent, Accountable City Services: Demanding responsiveness and follow-through from every department, with clear standards and public accountability.

Defending Civil Liberties and Immigrant Families: Opposing unlawful federal overreach and ensuring due process for all residents; because no one should live in fear in Somerville.

Real-Time, Resident-Focused Leadership: Providing in-person and virtual office hours, hands-on support with city issues, and tracking 311 trends to fix root causes—not just symptoms.

“Ward 5 deserves leadership that listens, acts decisively, and delivers results,” Mackey stated. “I have built businesses, created jobs, and navigated complex issues throughout my career. I’ll bring
that same determination and work ethic to City Council.”

Mackey invites Ward 5 residents and the broader Somerville community to join his campaign to build a stronger, safer, and more vibrant Ward 5.
