Brick lined well discovered at West Branch Library

On September 20, 2019, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

During the excavations at the rear if the basement of the West Branch Library a circular well, which had been covered and unused for decades has been discovered. It seems to be in good condition but with town water supply a well was no longer needed.

As the library is being renovated it would seem appropriate to somehow be able to preserve this part of Somerville’s history for posterity. Many discoveries of former activity are preserved under glass flooring at archaeological sites. As this is a library, a Carnegie library, it would seem appropriate that this well also be preserved.
