A Somerville Police officer on duty and assigned to uniform patrol at Assembly Row last Thursday evening spotted an allegedly known shoplifter, Kelly Carey, of Quincy, inside the Nike store.

According to police, her boyfriend, Jayson Ferguson, travels with her, and is reportedly also a known shoplifter.

Both Carey and Ferguson have both been arrested in the Assembly Row shopping area for theft related charges in the past, according to reports.

The officer radioed Somerville Police dispatch and requested a warrant check on Carey, and he was subsequently notified that she had 12 active warrants for her arrest.

As the officer received this information, Carey left Nike and walked to JP Licks, where she was observed meeting with Ferguson on the cement wall seating.

The officer called out to Carey and informed her that she had warrants for her arrest and she needed to put her bag on the ground and place her hands behind her back. She reportedly began to comply, but then began to flee across the crowded patio of JP Licks towards Tony C’s.

After a short foot pursuit, Carey began to lose her balance, and both she and the officer fell to the ground.

The officer was able to place Carey in handcuffs, but during this struggle Ferguson rushed the officer in an aggressive manner.

Another officer positioned herself between Ferguson and the arresting officer, but Ferguson remained irate and threatened to fight him.

Many families were in close proximity, and children began to cry due to the actions of Carey and Ferguson. Because of Ferguson’s irate behavior and continued threats of an assault, the officers placed him under arrest for disorderly conduct and taken to jail.

Carey was booked for the 12 warrants that included charges of possession of a burglarious instrument, larceny over $1200, destruction of property over $1200, credit card fraud over $1200, larceny from a building, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, receiving stolen property over $1200, possession of a class B drug, furnishing false ID, trespassing, felony daytime breaking and entering, possession of a class E drug, misdemeanor breaking and entering, and a carrying a dangerous weapon as well as resisting arrest.

Carey and Ferguson were both trespassed from all Federal Realty property at Assembly Row.
